Dr Bryan Gardiner

Overview

Dr Bryan Gardiner is a Reader in Computer Science and Deputy Head of the School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems at Ulster University. He received a first-class honours degree in Electronics and Computer Systems in 2006 and a PhD from Ulster University in 2010. As Deputy Head of School, he contributes to the strategic leadership, operational management and the continued development of the School’s internal and external activities. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Within Ulster’s Intelligent Systems Research Centre, Dr Gardiner leads the Intelligent Data Analytics research team. His research spans data analytics, artificial intelligence and computer vision, with applications in areas such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, intelligent systems, etc. His recent research includes work on deep-learning approaches to object detection, automated defect classification in semiconductor manufacturing, gait-based assessment, autism screening and health-data analytics.

Dr Gardiner is currently Principal Investigator of INNOVATE+ and a Co-Investigator on several major research and innovation initiatives, including the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre (AICC), the Smart Nano-Manufacturing Corridor (SmartNano NI), Semiconductor Photonics Education and Research Centre (SPEAR), and the Northwest City and Growth Deal (AI Plus). His wider research has received support from organisations including UK Research and Innovation, the Medical Research Council, Health and Social Care Northern Ireland, Invest Northern Ireland, the Department for the Economy and European regional programmes. He has also led and contributed to technology-commercialisation and knowledge-exchange projects supported by Innovate UK, Invest Northern Ireland and InterTradeIreland.

Dr Gardiner is a member of the IEEE UK and Ireland Section, the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the Irish Pattern Recognition and Classification Society, the International Association for Pattern Recognition and the British Machine Vision Association. He contributes to the wider research community through international collaboration, doctoral supervision, peer review and participation in conference programme committees. He supervises doctoral researchers across computer vision, explainable AI, advanced manufacturing and health analytics, and regularly reviews submissions for international journals and conferences.
