About our parenting rooms
Dedicated parenting rooms are available across our Belfast, Coleraine and Derry~Londonderry campuses for staff, students and visitors of all genders.
The rooms provide a private space for:
- breastfeeding
- expressing breast milk
- bottle-feeding
- other infant-feeding needs
- short-term privacy relating to breastfeeding or lactation
- resting during pregnancy
- privately self-administering prescribed medication associated with fertility treatment
The rooms are available equally to mothers, fathers, partners and carers. No parent or carer will be excluded because of their sex or gender, or because of how they choose or need to feed their baby.
Parenting rooms provide an additional option for anyone who would prefer privacy. Parents and carers are welcome to feed their baby in appropriate public areas across the University and are not required to use a parenting room.

Accessing a Parenting Room
To access a Parenting Room, visit the reception desk in the building where the room is located. Reception staff will either provide you with an access card or grant access using your existing staff or student card.
Breastfeeding Welcome Here at Ulster University
Ulster University is committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment for parents and carers of all genders.
Breastfeeding is welcome in appropriate public areas across our campuses. Dedicated Parenting Rooms are also available to any parent or carer who would prefer a private space for breastfeeding, expressing milk, bottle-feeding or meeting other infant-feeding needs.
Ulster University is a member of the Public Health Agency’s Breastfeeding Welcome Here scheme.
The scheme helps people who are breastfeeding identify places where they will be welcomed and supported when feeding their baby away from home. As a participating organisation, Ulster University is committed to ensuring that:
- breastfeeding is welcome in all appropriate areas of our campuses that are open to the public
- anyone breastfeeding in a public area will not be asked to stop or move elsewhere
- staff are aware of the scheme and know how to support and signpost parents and carers
- Breastfeeding Welcome Here signage is displayed across our campuses
The scheme supports our commitment to creating an inclusive environment where breastfeeding is welcomed and treated as a normal part of everyday life.
Breastfeeding in public spaces
Parents and carers are welcome to breastfeed or bottle-feed their babies in appropriate public and low-risk areas across Ulster University, including libraries, cafés and reception areas.
Anyone feeding a baby on campus:
- can do so without being asked to stop, move or cover up
- does not have to use a designated Parenting Room
- can ask a member of staff for help locating a private space if they would prefer one
Babies and children are welcome in appropriate low-risk public areas when accompanied and supervised by a parent or carer.
