The BAME+ (Black Asian and Minority Ethnic plus) Network proudly celebrated its 3rd anniversary, with a grand event held on each of the university’s three campuses.

The Belfast, Coleraine and Derry~Londonderry campuses were buzzing with excitement and unity as students and staff came together to honour the achievements and contributions of the BAME+ community, at the end of November.

Each event, which showcased the rich cultural heritage of the BAME+ community, was a true testament to the commitment and dedication of the organisation in promoting equality, diversity, inclusion, and social harmony within the university and beyond.

With the theme of ‘Celebrating Unity in Diversity’, the anniversary celebration aimed to create a platform for open dialogue, cultural exchange, and appreciation of various ethnic backgrounds.

The festivities welcomed distinguished guests, including university representatives, regional community groups, and members of the BAME+ Network organisation right across the three campuses. The vibrant atmosphere was further enlivened by the powerful community-focused traditional music, colourful decorations representing different cultures, and mouth-watering delicacies from various cuisines. The Diverse Youth Network (DYNI), Belfast City of Sanctuary (BCOS) and All Nations Ministries (ANM) were a few of the represented external groups.

Throughout the day, attendees were treated to a multitude of captivating talks and exchanges relating to dances, songs, and other artistic expressions, representing the cultural mosaic of the BAME community. The event offered a glimpse into the richness and vibrancy of different ethnic heritages.

Moreover, the anniversary celebration provided a platform for networking and knowledge-sharing, as students and professionals shared their experiences, challenges, and successes in the pursuit of education and career aspirations. Throughout its existence and presence in eth university, the network has organised several activities. It’s Interactive sessions, workshops, and panel discussions allowed for open conversations on themes such as cultural identity, discrimination, and breaking barriers.

Belfast campus event

Present at the event in the Belfast Campus were PVCs and Executive Deans, Professor Paul Connolly (AHSS and Executive Sponsor of the Network), Professor Colin Turner (CEBE), Professor Sandra Moffet (UUBS), Tim Brundle (Director of Research and Impact), Damian McAlister (Chief People Officer) and Deputy Director of People and Culture Directorate, Mark Latuske. Representing Ulster University’s Students’ Union were Oscar Kelly (VP, Equality and Belonging), Oluwaseyi Kushimo (VP, Belfast campus) and Sarah Reynolds (Student Success Officer).

Coleraine campus event

This year’s anniversary lecture was delivered in Coleraine campus by Steve Lazars, the Founder and Director of EMEEN (Ethnic Minority Employment and Entrepreneurship Network).  His talk was based on his overarching vision, which pivots on catalysing economic growth in both Northern and Southern Ireland, envisaging an empowered role for ethnic minorities in the region's prosperity. Such tireless efforts, echoes a resolute commitment to an inclusive and thriving future for all. Present at the Coleraine Campus were Professor Mary Hanlon-Fletcher (Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) and Professor Malachy O’Neill (Director of Regional Engagement).

Derry~Londonderry campus event

A spectacular celebration took place in the Derry~Londonderry campus. Staff and students joined the event with full enthusiasm. The event showcased a recap of all the efforts and activities organised by different working groups of BAME+ Network in the last year and facilitated discussion about the future plans and activities among the participants. The event was joined and supported by the several members of the senior leadership team of Ulster University including Professor Liam Maguire (PVC, Research).

Celebrating success

During these campus events, participants engaged in insightful conversations, exchanging experiences and perspectives on advancing diversity and representation across various sectors. Inspirational representatives emphasised the Network's significant milestones, underscoring the ongoing necessity for collaborative support for BAME communities.

The 3rd anniversary of the BAME+ Network was not only a celebration of achievements but also served as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the Black, Asian and Minority communities. It inspired attendees to continue striving for equality, diversity and inclusion, creating opportunities, and challenging stereotypes.

With the resounding success of the anniversary celebration, the BAME+ Network looks forward to continuing its mission of promoting inclusivity, education, and empowerment in the years to come. Their commitment to fostering an environment of diversity and cultural enrichment serves as an inspiration to the entire Ulster University community and beyond, reminding everyone of us, of the immense strength that lies within unity and shared experiences.
