English Language Support

Ulster University's Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT) is accredited by the British Council.

CELT offers courses and consultations in English language and study skills to Ulster University students of all subjects, levels and nationalities. Students and researchers for whom English is an additional language can access free CELT support throughout the academic year.

CELT In-sessional Modules

We offer a wide range of credit-bearing modules across all four campuses during semesters one and two. You can choose to focus on your academic or everyday English skills, or both. There are no fees to registered students for CELT in-sessional support. Individual academic consultations are also available at no cost.

For more information on in-sessional modules see our brochure.

English Language requirements

To study at Ulster University, you need good English and we will need to see recent evidence of this (certified within the last two years).

Most of our courses require a minimum English level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with no band score under 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement.

Some courses have higher language prerequisites – please check entry requirements on the relevant course webpage.

You may be asked for a Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate: IELTS or Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE), or you may hold other English language qualifications that we can recognise. Other acceptable English language qualifications.

Many international students also need a UK visa to study at Ulster University. If you do not hold an unconditional offer from us, you will need to take a SELT and pass at the level required by the UK authorities in order to receive a conditional offer. For IELTS, please ensure you take the 'IELTS test for UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) purposes'. The 'IELTS for UKVI' is a requirement for Tier four students hoping to come onto a pre-sessional course. UK Visa application guide.

CELT Pre-sessional courses

If your current English level is close to your course entry requirement, you may be offered the opportunity to attend a pre-sessional. These summer programmes are designed for you to improve your English, meet your peers and adapt to life in Ulster.
