Dr Thomas Hansen, Senior Lecturer, has been appointed as a Maria Zambrano (MZ) Distinguished Researcher. The Maria Zambrano (MZ) Distinguished Researcher appointment, funded by the Spanish Government with support from the EU Commission’s ‘Next-Generation-EU’ framework, is for attracting international talent.

The research appointment allows Dr Hansen to focus on ongoing research, including the Transitional Justice (TJ) Standardization project (funded by the Independent Danish Research Council), while, together with leading players in the area, starting a new line of research concerning accountability for environmental crimes in armed conflict. The Secretariat of the International Council of Environmental Law (ICEL), with which Dr Hansen will collaborate, is hosted at Carlos III. The appointment will produce a range of research outputs in the areas of TJ, accountability studies, peacebuilding and environmental law, including co-authored publications with ICEL members as well as members of the “Globalization, Integration Processes and International Cooperation” research group at Carlos III.

The appointment is hosted with the Department of International Law, Ecclesiastical Law and Philosophy of Law at Carlos III. The MZ appointment is based at the Carlos III University in Madrid and runs from 1 February 2023 – 31 December 2024.
