We are pleased to announce that Michelle Canning has been awarded the TJI Scholarship this year. Michelle, pictured here with Dr Esther McGuinness, Head of the Law School, is a student on our LLM in Gender, Conflict and Human Rights programme.

Michelle has enjoyed a 30-year career as a communicator, a journalist/news editor, a senior public servant and Ministerial advisor. In the past her focus has been on advocacy and activism through a two-decade career in campaigning journalism, highlighting and challenging systemic inequalities, capturing and documenting experiences of the impact of deprivation, conflict and the resulting denial of rights.

More recently, her focus has shifted to policy. For the last 18 months, she has held a policy remit in NIACRO. Her interest has been in facilitating knowledge exchange on criminal justice issues across the island and enabling women who come into contact with the criminal justice system to share their experiences directly with policy and decision makers to urge best practice.
