Overview

Research in the new School of Medicine seeks to make a difference in the lives of local people through innovative high quality research methods. Our multi-disciplinary research is led by world-leading academics and covers areas including medical education, paediatric cardiology, public health, health-related behaviours, endocrinology and obesity.

Collaboration is central to our approach, and we partner with a wide range of stakeholders including community and voluntary groups, local health services including general practice and hospitals, and government departments and the Public Health Agency.

Summary

The Clinical Medicine Research Cluster undertakes research in clinical populations, including clinical trials of new therapies.

Professor Alex Miras’s clinical research group is conducting infusion experimental medicine studies to assess the glucose and appetite-lowering potential, and mechanism of action, of novel peptides for diabetes and obesity. The results of this study will determine if these peptides have potential as a novel therapy to treat diabetes and obesity.

Professor Richard Brady is a robotic IBD, colorectal and general surgeon with clinical and research interests in surgical technology, device evaluation, inflammatory bowel disease, and the surgical microbiome.  He is based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but with close collaborations with local universities and local commercial partners. His current roles involve delivery of a large commercial research portfolio across regions and laboratory experimental works in Newcastle and Northern Ireland. He is deputy director of the NIHR commercial research delivery centre in Newcastle.

The Paediatric Cardiology research programme, led by Professor Frank Casey, includes projects investigating a broad range of areas relevant to the care of children and young people with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). A key focus of this research group is investigating the long-term quality of life of those treated in childhood for CHD. This includes studies on educational and developmental outcomes as well as measures of physical activity and well-being. We are conducting a very large study on the quality of life of the Down Syndrome population, and also the Baby Hearts 2 Study investigating the potential impact of periconceptual environmental factors on CHD and developmental outcome. The research team is multidisciplinary and having attracted additional grant funding is rapidly expanding.

Dr Nazia Chaudhuri conducts clinical real-world research in interstitial lung diseases (ILD)/pulmonary fibrosis.  She performs retrospective and prospective real world cohort studies asking relevant clinical questions about the diagnosis and management of complex respiratory conditions such as ILD/pulmonary fibrosis. She runs clinical trials of novel therapies for ILD and research exploring the translational aspect of pulmonary fibrosis.

  • Experience using research methods or other approaches relevant to the subject domain
  • Sound understanding of subject area as evidenced by a comprehensive research proposal
  • A comprehensive and articulate personal statement
  • Research proposal of 1500 words detailing aims, objectives, milestones and methodology of the project

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours Degree in a subject relevant to the proposed area of study. We may also consider applications from those who hold equivalent qualifications, for example, a Lower Second Class Honours Degree plus a Master’s Degree with Distinction.

In exceptional circumstances, the University may consider a portfolio of evidence from applicants who have appropriate professional experience which is equivalent to the learning outcomes of an Honours degree in lieu of academic qualifications.

PhD graduates are recognised by employers to hold valuable transferrable skills, as the nature of the degree trains candidates in creativity, critical inquiry, problem solving, negotiation skills, professionalism and confidence.

The most recent Ulster survey of PhD graduates found that 92% had secured employment within the first year since graduation (HESA Destination of Leavers Survey 2015), and while two thirds end up in the Higher Education or Research sectors, the range of skills acquired equips the remainder for employment in a wide range of contexts.
