Professor Bazira will be joining us from Hull York Medical School where he is Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Medical Education. In this role, he oversees the Hull York Medical School portfolio of postgraduate taught (PGT) and continuing professional development (CPD) programmes, and leads the development and implementation of related policy, infrastructure and frameworks.

Since 2024, he has been the Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning for the School, and as Director of the Centre for Anatomical and Human Sciences (CAHS), he manages an academic centre renowned for its expertise in clinical, functional, and comparative anatomy, as well as human basic and applied physiology.

Professor Carol Curran, Pro-Vice Chancellor & Executive Dean of Faculty of Life and Health Sciences, said:

“We are delighted to appoint Professor Peter Bazira to the role of Dean of the School of Medicine where his expertise will be a tremendous asset in further establishing the School in both its teaching and research endeavours. We look forward to his leadership and collaboration with our students, staff and School, and we are excited for the contributions he will make to both our academic community and the field of medicine.”

Professor Peter Bazira will be replacing Professor Louise Dubras, who joined the University as Foundation Dean for the School of Medicine in June 2018 and has announced her plans to retire in the summer, following the graduation of the first cohort of doctors from the MBBS Graduate Entry Medicine programme.

The School of Medicine has already made significant strides, with a full complement of medical students and key programmes such as the MBBS Graduate Entry Medicine programme, MSc in Physician Associate studies, BSc in Personalised Medicine and online MSc in Personalised Medicine.

During her time as Foundation Dean, Professor Louise Dubras has been instrumental in leading the School of Medicine through its establishment, welcoming its first students in August 2021, through its accreditation process with the General Medical Council, and further advancing the School locally and internationally.

On Louise’s retirement, Professor Carol Curran commented:

“Professor Louise Dubras has not only shaped the future of countless medical professionals, but also redefined excellence in education, research, and patient care. As she embarks on this next chapter, we thank her for her dedication to advancing the field of medicine in Ulster University and in Derry~Londonderry, and for fostering a community of compassion, innovation, and collaboration that we hope to continue to adopt.”

Welcoming Professor Peter Bazira:

As Dean of Ulster University’s School of Medicine, Professor Bazira will play a pivotal leadership role in advancing the School’s mission within the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences at Ulster University.

Professor Bazira’s key responsibilities include academic leadership, marketing and course development, and resource management, and he will contribute to the overall academic and resource planning within the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences.

On his appointment, Professor Peter Bazira commented:

“It is a privilege to have been selected as the next Dean of Ulster University's School of Medicine to succeed Professor Louise Dubras. Louise has done an exceptional job as Foundation Dean, and I look forward to building on that success and leading the School to the next stage, both in terms of training the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers and in developing a robust portfolio of world-leading research.

“I bring shared values and a strong commitment to delivering outstanding education, creating optimal work conditions for staff, and strengthening collaborations with stakeholders and partners.”
