A University of Ulster graduate, who co-founded a successful construction business in the US, is funding a new scholarship for students from his home county of Fermanagh.

Derrygonnelly man, Marty Meehan and his wife Mary Ellen, have pledged £1,000 per year of study to one University of Ulster student throughout their degree programme, beginning in the next academic year, 2014/15.

A construction engineering graduate from the university, Mr Meehan is managing director of the New York and New Jersey based, Stratus Construction Group.

He has worked for a number of global construction firms, including as Project Manager for the key superstructure contractor that recently completed the Freedom Tower project at the World Trade Centre site in New York City.

Mr Meehan said: “My degree and experience at the University of Ulster have been invaluable in my career to date. By providing this support to students from my home county of Fermanagh, we want to ensure that financial need is no barrier to their academic and career aspirations.”

Welcoming the new scholarship, Eddie Friel, Director of Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Ulster, said: “We are delighted Marty and Mary Ellen have pledged this award to help one of our students fulfill their potential. Marty is proof that a University of Ulster degree can open doors to a hugely successful international career and I hope that many of our students are motivated by his career achievements to date.”

The Meehan Family Scholarship is open to first year undergraduate students who live, or have attended school in County Fermanagh.

All students undertaking the eligible programmes of study will receive details of how to apply for this award in their admission pack.
