College of Medicine and Dentistry

Established in 2018, we are one of the few private education providers offering a wide range of training programmes for the dental team and all healthcare professionals.

Working across a blended learning concept, we aim to reach out to all aspiring individuals to improve their knowledge and skills.  Our collaboration with Ulster University enables us to offer a wide range of career progression opportunities.

History

Having grown to a multi-national alumni and student body of over 200 graduates, the CoMD traces its beginnings within the BPP University School of Health, which in 2013 became the first private university in the UK to deliver postgraduate clinical dentistry programmes, starting with a class of 25 students.

The CoMD has since been established as an independent college in 2018, working with the University of Ulster (Northern Ireland) and is continuing its drive and vision to become a leading independent research and innovation institution committed to excellence in healthcare education and training.

With a 7,600 sqft campus in central Birmingham comprising of a state-of-the-art simulation centre and clinical facilities, alongside an outreach centre, the CoMD is focussed on its mission to deliver progressive healthcare patient care and education, alongside its collaborative research and teaching facilities.

Advanced General Dental Practice

Distance, Blended or Full Time Learning

This course fosters intellectual and clinical development of dentists allowing them to extend and deepen their analytical and practical skills which underpin their daily practice.

This MSc in Advanced General Dental Practice teaches you the skills you need to pass the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) or the Licensure in Dental Surgery (LDS) exam to be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and practice dentistry within the UK.

This course will provide the following:

  • Focused tuition and intensive training on ORE and LDS curricula
  • Mentorship to register and work as a dental therapist, which enables candidates to work as a DT whilst preparing for the ORE or LDS examination
  • Provide the students with the appropriate training required to pass the ORE or the LDS examinations
  • Upon completion of the MSc programme, international students are able to extend their stay in the UK on a two-year work visa

  • Professor Maher Almasri

    Professor Maher Almasri

    Dean

    After completing a degree in Dental Surgery from Damascus University in 1995, Maher pursued a career in Oral Surgery at the Royal London Hospitals in London until 2003.

    He had an intensive year-long Implant Dentistry training at the Katharinen-Hospital in Stuttgart, Germany as an international scholar. He graduated with a Masters and Doctorate Degree from Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry wherein he researched Tissue Regeneration and Engineering.

    He developed an interest in surgical education and started a pioneering cadaveric model for training dentists in a safe and effective manner.

    In 2013, Maher founded and led BPP University’s Faculty of Dentistry, which became one of the largest postgraduate dentistry departments in the UK, and played a significant role in reforming dental private higher education. In parallel, he earned his MBA in Higher Education Management from University College London.

    In addition, he has been actively involved in the development and support of research activities on an international level including Austria, China, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and UAE.

    Maher Almasri received an honorary professorship from Bari University in Italy and full Professorship title from BPP University.

  • Professor Noha Seoudi

    Professor Noha Seoudi

    Research Director

    Noha graduated with an Honours Degree in Dentistry and gained a Master’s Degree in Oral Medicine from Cairo University, Egypt.

    She was appointed to a prestigious clinical academic training and became one of only eight Clinical Oral Microbiologists in the UK.

    She is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Glasgow, all by examination.

    Her PhD thesis focuses on the interrelationship between oral microbiome and host immune response in patients with Behçet’s Disease.

    She was awarded the Young Investigator Award in the International Conference on Behçet’s Disease, Japan, 2012. She is a reviewer in many scientific journals and an examiner in two Royal Collages.

    Noha is also a member of the English Surveillance Programme for Antimicrobial Utilisation and Resistance (ESPAUR) Dental Subgroup. Her current research interests are: oral microbiome analysis and antimicrobial stewardship.

  • Associate Professor Sadia Jahanzeb

    Associate Professor Sadia Jahanzeb

    Director of Education

    Sadia is an Associate Professor in Dental Education and Head of Academic Affairs. Sadia Jahanzeb qualified as a dentist from the University of the Punjab, Lahore in 2001 and later completed her MPhil in Microbiology from the University of Health Sciences, Lahore in 2008.

    She worked as a Programme Leader for the MClinDent programmes at BPP University, working closely with the faculty in the design and development of innovative and inspiring teaching and assessments required for quality assurance and quality enhancement of postgraduate Dentistry programmes. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Dental Education from Kings College, London.

    Prior to this, she was an Assistant Professor in the Periodontology Department at University College Lahore for two years. She has completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, UK.

    Professor Raj K RajaRayan OBE

    Head of Restorative Dentistry

    Honours: Officer of the Order of the British Empire for Services to Dental Education

    Qualifications: MA (Clin Ed), MSc(Lon), BDS(Lon),FDS RCSEd, FFGDP(UK)RCS(Eng), MRD RCS(Eng),MGDS RCS(Eng), DRD RCSEd, LDS RCS(Eng) MRIP, RPf, CertP. Honorary: FICD,FPFA,FACD

    He was the past Dean, Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), The Royal College of Surgeons of England; and past Associate Dean of Postgraduate Dentistry, London Deanery, University of London.

    In 1999, Raj was awarded the Order of the Officer of the British Empire by Her Majesty, the Queen, for services to Dental Education in 1999. He was a former member of the Standing Dental Advisory Committee to the Secretary of State for Health and the Lord Chancellor on Judicial Appointments of Judges as well as of Magistrates. He also served on other advisory panels.

    Raj was the youngest Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners, the Royal College of Surgeons of England where he served as Chairman of Finance, Chairman of Examinations and as Vice Dean. He has examined for the Diploma, Membership and Fellowship examinations of the College and he is an emeritus examiner. He was also an elected Council member of the statutory body, the General Dental Council with the largest vote.

    He was the Chairman of the AOG, past President of the British Society for General Dental Surgery, past Chairman of the Pierre Fauchard Academy (UK Chapter) and the National Centre for Transcultural Oral Health which he fathered. He has been elected honorary life member of several dental organisations from many nations including India, Malaysia, UK, Lebanon and Sri Lanka.

    He has co-authored, edited and contributed chapters in several significant publications including the Self Assessment Manual and Standards, Pathways in Practice, Selection Criteria in Radiography, Dentists Patients and Minorities, Accessory Points, Occlusion and Articulation and so on. He originated and served on the Editorial Board of the first Continuing Education Journal (CPD-Dentistry) in Britain, which was the first verifiable CPD journal in the UK and continues to serve on several editorial panels.

    He is a registered specialist in restorative dentistry and an internationally acclaimed lecturer having lectured as keynote speaker in numerous countries at several international events.

    Raj K Raja Rayan OBE was a Director on the Board of Management of the Eastman Dental Institute prior to its merger with University College London. During his tenure, the new International Centre for Excellence in Dentistry was established to underpin the continuing professional development of general dental practitioners. His name is included in the plaque. As Associate Dean at the London Deanery, providing training and development of over 3,600 dentists and 7,000 Dental Care professionals, running over 800 educational activities in London and operating from 15 postgraduate centres, including Hi Fidelity simulation facilities.

  • Professor Parmjit Singh

    Professor Parmjit Singh

    Head of Orthodontics

    After qualifying as a dentist from the University of Newcastle in 2001, Parmjit relocated to London where he worked in general practice and at three undergraduate teaching hospitals. His specialist orthodontic training took place in London, Essex and Suffolk. He is trained to consultant level, the highest level for a UK orthodontist and has worked at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London and Ipswich Hospital as a locum consultant.

    Parmjit’s special interests include adult orthodontics (having completed an Master’s in smile aesthetics) as well as orthodontic retention, a subject area he has both lectured and published in. He provides the full range of orthodontic appliances including Incognito lingual braces and Invisalign.

    He thoroughly enjoys teaching and has been awarded the Certificate in Learning and Teaching. He is a Professor of Orthodontics at the College of Medicine and Dentistry, Birmingham, where he is Course Director for the Master in Orthodontics and the Master in Clinical Orthodontics.

    He is also the orthodontic lead for the Diploma in Orthodontics that is delivered at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration in Accra, Ghana in collaboration with the City of London Dental School and runs a Certificate in Orthodontics in Istanbul, Turkey in collaboration with the Vesta Academy.

    Parmjit is a member of the British Orthodontic Society and the European Orthodontic Society. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

    He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeon’s Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS), the Royal College of Surgeon’s Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy, the Royal College of Surgeon’s Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) and also examines for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses where he sits on the orthodontic committee. In addition to these roles, he is a clinical adviser at the General Dental Council as an expert witness providing independent, impartial clinical advice.

    He spends his time between London and Spain and enjoys cycling, hiking and DIY in his spare time.

  • Professor Flavio Pisani

    Professor Flavio Pisani

    Head of Periodontics

    Flavio Pisani graduated in Dentistry from the Catholic University of Rome “Agostino Gemelli” (Italy) in 1993. He holds a MClinDent in Oral Surgery, a MSc in Implant Dentistry and a MClinDent in Periodontology from the SIdP-Italian Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. He completed his PhD in Dentistry in 2008 at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (Italy).

    Before relocating to the UK, Flavio has been actively involved as a clinical teaching fellow in dental education focused on periodontology, and oral and implant surgery at undergraduate and postgraduate courses in several Italian Universities. He is a Member of the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdPI). Dr. Flavio Pisani has a special interest in the management of periodontal diseases, and advanced treatments of regenerative and root coverage surgery.

    Flavio has held the position of Full Time Senior Clinical Lecturer in Periodontology at BPP University since 2014 and he passionately leads the MClinDent Programme in Periodontology; he recently undertook the role of Head of Periodontics at the newly established College of Dentistry in Birmingham.

  • Associate Professor Curd Bollen

    Associate Professor Curd Bollen

    DDS, PhD, MSc, MClinDent

    Head of Implant Dentistry

    Curd Bollen graduated in 1992 as dentist (DDS) at the Catholic University Leuven (B). In 1996 he received his PhD, and in 1997 he finished his MSc in Periodontology & Implantology (Leuven). In 2016 he completed his MClinDent programme from the University of the Pacific, USA.

    Bollen published 35 articles in international dental journals and was co-author of 8 books/chapters in books. He is editor in chief of the Journal of Dental Health, Oral Disorders & Therapy.

    Curd has been leading a clinic in the Netherlands, actively performing clinical work in periodontology, implantology and halitosis. Since 2018 he is scientific board member of the European Society for Ceramic Implantology (ESCI).

    He has an extensive international experience working in academic institutions, as a consultant in the University of Leuven, Liège University, Nijmegen University, Bonn University, and in Düsseldorf University where he was a clinical assistant professor. He also worked in the University of Manchester as a senior clinical lecturer. He recently joined the College of Medicine & Dentistry, Birmingham as an Associate Clinical Professor.

  • Visiting Professor Aakshay Gulati

    Visiting Professor Aakshay Gulati

    BDS, FDSRCS (Eng), MBBS, MRCS, FRCS (OMFS)

    Head of Oral Surgery

    Mr. Aakshay Gulati is appointed as consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon, with a specialist interest in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction, at the renowned Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East Grinstead and is a core member of the West Kent Head & Neck multidisciplinary team. He has a keen interest in promoting higher education and regularly lectures and holds workshops in the fields of oral & maxillofacial surgery and implantology.

    Mr. Gulati’s higher surgical training in oral & maxillofacial training has been in the South Coast of England. He has completed a head and neck sub-specialty fellowship in an internationally acclaimed centre in Munich and was subsequently also selected for the highly coveted national interface head and neck fellowships.

    Aakshay holds positions with European Association of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (EACMFS) as an Executive Officer and as a Specialty Tutor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital. He has also contributed to a number of publications ranging from Head and Neck Cancer Research to Litigation in National Health Service Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

  • Visiting Professor Ali Ghanem

    Visiting Professor Ali Ghanem

    Head of Facial Aesthetics

    After completing his undergraduate medical training in Damascus, Manchester, Oxford and Edinburgh Universities, Ali undertook early surgical training in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

    He then successfully completed the United Kingdom National Plastic Surgery Specialty Training as one of only 5 academic trainees in Plastic Surgery in London leading to the award of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Plast) and Certification of Completion of Specialty Training (CCT).

    He is on the General Medical Council specialist register in plastic surgery and a full member of the United Kingdom Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

    In addition to his UK training, Ali undertook international advanced specialty fellowships in Reconstructive Microsurgery (Seoul, South Korea) Aesthetic and Breast Reconstructive Surgery (Brussels, Belgium), Paediatric and Adult Maxillofacial Surgery (Paris, France & London, UK), Facial Aesthetic Surgery (Casablanca, Morocco & Miami USA), Paediatric Plastic Surgery (Toronto, Canada) and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery as the holder of the prestigious International Fellowship Award of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: Facelift (Dr C. Clark – Orlando and Dr T. Marten – San Francisco), Body Contouring and Regenerative Surgery (Dr S. Cohen San Diego), Aesthetic Oculoplastic Surgery (Dr M. Codner – Atlanta).

    He is appointed senior clinical lecturer in plastic reconstructive aesthetic surgery at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Consultant Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon at the Phoenix Hospital Group and the Cranley Clinic in London.

    He is the Programme Lead for the Master of Science in Aesthetic Medicine and Reconstructive Microsurgery with an active research, teaching and supervisory role. His clinical practice is dedicated solely to aesthetic plastic surgery and his reconstructive work is focused on treating children and adults with complex deformities in low and middle income countries and war zones as part of various charities and organisations. He has travelled to teach and operate in this capacity in his native Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya and India.

  • Visiting Professor Ali Ghanem

    Visiting Professor James Prichard

    Head of Endodontics

    Professor Prichard is a renowned teacher in Endodontics, delivering hands on courses, lectures and seminars throughout the UK and overseas.

    He has held the posts of Associate Clinical Teacher, Clinical Teaching Fellow and Clinical Supervisor in Endodontics on the Masters Programme at The University of Warwick prior to joining BPP University in London as Visiting Professor and Programme leader for the MClinDent in Endodontology.

    He has supervised several Masters research projects and has published in the scientific journals including the International Endodontic Journal and The British Dental Journal. He has lectured at several international conferences including the British Dental Association annual meeting, the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the AEEDC in Dubai and the PAEC in Cairo.

    He is an International Key Opinion Leader for FKG Dentaire and has demonstrated the latest advances in endodontic technology for Schottlander and FKG Dentaire at the Dental Showcases and Dentistry Show in the UK since 2004.

    He gained his Master’s Degree (MSc) in Restorative Dental Practice with distinction for his dissertation on ultrasonic cleaning of root canals which he completed at The Eastman Dental Institute in London. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics in New York, an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry.
