How to Find External Funding Opportunities

UKRI is a key player in research and innovation across the UK, offering a variety of funding schemes for all kinds of disciplines and career stages. UKRI provides one of the largest sources of research funding in the UK, supporting everything from early-stage projects to large-scale collaborative initiatives. By applying for UKRI funding, you’re not just securing financial support - you’re also joining a national and international network of researchers working on cutting-edge projects.

A UKRI funding opportunities newsletter has been developed by the Research Development team at Ulster University to keep you informed about the opportunities that are currently available, as well as to help you stay up-to-date as new calls are launched.

In addition, all UKRI Research Councils are now using TFS which requires completion of a Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI) section on each application. UKRI have provided the following guidance to support researchers.

Research Connect

Research Connect is a specialist online database designed to help researchers and institutions identify and access funding opportunities for research and development projects across the globe. Research Connect is a quick and easy way to give researchers access to:

• Thousands of funding opportunities from governments, business and charities.
• Personalised Searches: users can perform tailored searches to find funding opportunities that match their specific research interests or institutional priorities.
• Automated alerts that tell you when specific opportunities arise.
• Collaboration and Sharing: ability to quickly share comprehensive details about an opportunity with colleagues.
• Global Coverage: Research Connect covers funding sources from multiple countries, making it a valuable tool for international projects.

Access and Usage

First access the Research Connect website via the link below.

Next enter your University email and password to Research Connect (please ensure that when creating your profile to select the UoA subgroup which you are aligned with to access generic opportunities in this field).

Research Bullet-in Searches have been created by the Research Development and contains a list of research funding opportunities which are tailored specifically for each Unit of Assessment (UoA).

These can be accessed by creating your Research Connect profile (via the link above) and joining the Workgroup which is aligned to your UoA.
