Ulster University has awarded an Honorary Doctorate to Alastair Bell, a distinguished software entrepreneur and investor, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Northern Ireland technology sector.
A graduate of Ulster’s Computing programme in 1990, Alastair began his career as a software developer at Relay Software before becoming Managing Director in 1999. Under his leadership, the company grew to become a market leader in insurance software, earning prestigious accolades including Investor in People and Employer of Choice.
Since leading successful exits from Relay Software in 2014 and 2016, Alastair has remained at the forefront of Northern Ireland’s tech ecosystem, actively investing in high-growth software businesses. He supports local management teams across his portfolio, drawing on 35 years of technical and business development expertise to drive innovation and scale in global markets.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alastair said:
