Library Open Research Team offers support in the following areas:
A key Open Research practice is Open Access, which aims to provide free and unrestricted access to research outputs.
The Library Open Research Team can provide support and guidance on the following topics:
- How to publish your research as Open Access in academic journals
- What publishing agreements are in place to support Open Access publishing
- What funding is available to support Open Access publishing
- Open Access compliance with research funders such as UKRI

The Open Research team offers training workshops each academic year on Open Access publishing which is open to all researchers at Ulster University and details can be found on the Library’s Training & Workshops.
If you are a PhD researcher there is also Open Access publishing training each academic year which is provided via the Researcher Development Programme.
If you require support in depositing your research outputs into PURE, the online repository at Ulster University, please contact the Research Performance Team at Pure-Support@ulster.ac.uk.
The Open Research Librarian can also help Ulster researchers navigate copyright queries and make their academic outputs publicly accessible.
The Open Research Librarian can provide support and guidance on the following topics:
- Rights Retention: supporting researchers in retaining publishing rights
- Choosing open licenses (like Creative Commons)
- Publishing contracts advice
- Third-party copyright material (e.g. images, tables, excerpts, maps, datasets) reuse in research publications
- Requesting copyright permissions

Depositing your doctoral thesis in an online repository enables your research to be discovered and accessed by a global audience.
The Open Research team oversees the deposit of PhD theses into PURE to make them openly accessible.
The team can provide support and guidance on the following topics:
- Final submission of your thesis
- Related copyright issues such as including published papers in a thesis
- Thesis embargoes
- Changes to a thesis post-submission
We can also assist researchers in accessing older PhD theses which are not currently available on PURE.
