What is Raleigh Expedition?

Raleigh Expedition is a truly unique international volunteer experience for young people (17-24). You can take part in different projects, equip yourself with new skills, create lasting change and work with communities to take urgent action on the world’s most important issues.

Whether you are taking a gap year or want to do something meaningful in your summer, join young volunteers from across the world and a community of thousands of Raleigh Alumni.

Raleigh currently offer two different countries for their  Expeditions:

Costa Rica

Costa Rica in one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, home to national parks, volcanoes and stunning landscapes.

Be culturally immersed in an indigenous community while on projects supporting access to education, and conquer a whopping 250km trek across beautiful rainforest and mountain areas.

Kruger, South Africa

There is nowhere better than Greater Kruger to walk in the footsteps of the world’s most spectacular wildlife.

Become one with local community life and the African bush on community and environment projects, and experience South Africa’s highest mountains whilst trekking the incredible Drakensberg Mountains.

This is how Raleigh Volunteers describe Raleigh Expedition

  • 7 weeks = £3,570
  • 10 weeks = £3,995
Project Includes Accommodation and Food.
Funding availableFunding is available to support with  the cost of the Project.

Mobility scholarships funded by the Irish Government will contribute up to £1000 towards the cost of return flights to Fiji.

You can choose between different Expedition lengths:

  • 10-weeks: The most immersive and popular Expedition. Take part in all three full phases.
  • 7 weeks: Take part in two full phases. You’ll be assigned either the Community or Environmental project with the Adventure Leadership Trek.
  • 4 weeks: Take part in a full phase of a Community Project or Environmental Project (assigned) with a shorter 5-day trek.

Widening Access and Participation

You will be eligible for a higher rate of Turing Scheme funding if you meet one of the criteria below:

  • You are in receipt of an Ulster University Access Bursary
  • You are from an area of low higher education participation, low household income or low socioeconomic status (including those with an annual household income of £25,000 or less)
  • You receive Income Support or Universal Credit and are financially supporting yourself or financially supporting yourself and someone who is dependent on you and living with them, such as a child or partner
  • You are from a background of care
  • You have caring responsibilities
  • You have no living parents
  • Your parents cannot be found or it is not reasonably practicable to get in touch with either of them (estranged students)
  • You are a refugee or asylum seeker

Proof of the above criteria will be required as part of your application.
