Dr George Burke

Overview

Dr George Burke is a Lecturer in the School of Engineering and a Member of the Engineering Research Institute. He joined Ulster University as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Nanotechnology and Integrated Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC) in 2004 and was appointed to his current position in 2010. George’s research interests are in the areas of the molecular and cellular interactions with biomaterials and in the manufacture of functionalised biomaterials for ophthalmic, dermal and cardiovascular tissue engineering applications. He has a strong interest in retinal tissue engineering and cellular delivery vehicles for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. George has also developed and successfully patented “RegenaGraft”, an advanced polymer processing technology for the production of synthetic and biopolymer scaffolds for cell culture, in vitro toxicology and the tissue engineering markets. George is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and is responsible for the supervision of a number of PhD studentships.

George completed his BSc (Hons) in Anatomy, PhD and Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching at Queen’s University Belfast. He is currently President of the Northern Ireland Biomedical Engineering Society (NIBES). He has also been a member of the Microscopical Society of Ireland (MSI), the European Society of Biomaterials (ESB), the Tissue and Cell Engineering Society (TCES) and the Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS).
