An amazing change to learn and grow in a new environment!
It was such an amazing time in Brussels getting to explore the city while learning about sustainability and carbon literacy.
Getting to go to the EU parliament and learn how laws and policies get voted on in the hemicycle. The UN climate summit simulation was an eye opener into how different sections of society have to work together for preventing climate change and how those with the most power have the biggest say and will work to benefit themselves rather than the earth.
A visit to Brussels Aquaponic farm allowed us to see how a company such as a farm can be sustainable through the recycling of energy generated from heat loss in fridges, to the regeneration of water from fish farming into irrigation of plants.
Getting to explore the city at night time and during the week was great: I had the opportunity to see tourist spots such as the atomium, manneken pis and grand place all with new friends I made during my time. Go to all the tourist spots and take plenty of pictures!
The culture was varied throughout Brussels; it is known for being the city of cultures with a big mix of nationalities and 3 official languages of French, Flemish/Dutch and German. Everyone was very friendly just like back home.
The parliament in Brussels and Northern Ireland are very similar with both countries going a long time without parliament.
The food was very diverse just like home where there is a lot of "well known" foods such as fries and stew while still having the opportunity to try new cultures food such as ethiopian.
I found it very easy to meet new friends from both Ulster University and the universities of Bath Spa and Exeter. Everyone was there as they had an interest in sustainability and getting to experience a new city so getting to be involved in group activities and go out together allowed us to be close and I have made friendships that will last!
Don't let a barrier of language or uncertainty stop you from applying: everyone going with you will be strangers going into the experience with different skills and experiences to you and you will make friends and grow in confidence as you go along!
You will never regret going but would regret never trying!
