Hi there! I’m Aimee Greenan, 1st year student studying Communication, Advertising & Marketing (known as CAM) here at Ulster University.

This time last year, as I was considering my post-school options, I had absolutely no idea whether I wanted to go university or take a gap year, as there are simply so many options beyond school. In the end, I chose university, and one year later I can truthfully say making the decision to come to UU has been one of the best decisions that I’ve made in my entire life!

Life at university is so much more independent and liberating than school life, but even still, there’s a lot of support at university if you need it. Having started at Ulster University, I have made so many new friends and got to know so many more people even outside my course.

So, why CAM?

The list of reasons are endless, as are the career opportunities a course in CAM can offer because the area of study has only been established in the past 20 years, thus it’s a highly sought-after degree by employers within the PR, marketing and communications industry. Employment after CAM is pretty much guaranteed because of how wide and all-encompassing the industry is. It turns out being the social species that we are, we are communicating all the time, even if we don’t realise it.

What made me choose UU?

Firstly the course itself. Ulster is the only University in Ireland offering a full honours programme in Communication, Advertising & Marketing, so it was a no brainer!

And I can’t recommend Ulster enough. Most of my UCAS choices were UU courses because of the diversity of programmes they offer, with many courses having a high employability rate as well as the opportunity to undertake a work industry placement year.

The way in which the course is taught makes the content so much easier to understand due to the lecturers explaining everything well in depth. Also the sense of community you feel at Ulster makes you feel right at home, with everyone being so friendly from the minute you arrive on campus. Also, lecturers are so helpful and nothing is too much to ask which makes everything a lot less stressful as if you are struggling to get your head around something they are there to help you.

My advice to students considering their university choices would be to do whatever you truly want to do no matter what anyone else says. You can do anything you put your mind to if you believe in yourself. But more specifically, get involved in clubs within school or outside of school to help get as much experience as possible. This can really benefit you as it increases your confidence and allows you to meet more people.

Any form of social activity will really benefit you as the communication aspect of my course already has me analysing everything I say and how others react. If you considering a course related to psychology there are many elements of psychology in CAM.

So, with all that said, I hope to see you at Ulster University next year!
