Aoife’s passion for fashion design started in early childhood and is rooted in the rich textile history of Derry/Londonderry, where she hails from. Her desire to pursue a career as a fashion designer led her to Ulster University’s Belfast School of Art. Aoife’s raw talent, creativity and uniqueness was instantly apparent and she excelled in her course. Whilst undertaking her studies Aoife was selected for the Ulster University’s Brundle Award, which was introduced to help final year School of Art students reach their artistic ambition and potential.

Aoife is an award-winning designer whose designs have been featured at fashion shows across the UK and Ireland, and most recently, at New York Fashion Week. She is also the winner of BBC NI’s television series ‘A Stitch Through Time’ in August 2023.

Aoife’s design influences draw from past fashion trends, which she reimagines to create distinctive, textured designs that are handmade and sustainable. Recently, Aoife has launched her own business, AH Designs where her one-of-a-kind pieces can be rented, and she offers bespoke design services for those who prefer a personalised garment.

Aoife has an entrepreneurial mindset and is social media savvy; through the launch of her online business and wider marketing successes, Aoife has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Marketing and Enterprising Student of the Year Award at the upcoming Northern Ireland Social Media Awards 2023 in October. Also shortlisted are fellow Ulster University graduates, Lauren Kelso, Leah Crozier, Connor Scott, Máirtín Gabhann and Maja Szotkiewicz.

We are also delighted to be welcoming Aoife back to Ulster University this academic year to take up an artist in residency position at the Belfast campus.

Speaking about her experience at Ulster University, Aoife said,

Studying at Ulster University over the past few years has shaped my growth and boosted my confidence as a designer. The exceptional facilities, particularly the industrial machinery, have been essential to preparing me for this industry.

The guidance from dedicated lecturers, like Dean Liggett, has continuously motivated me to push my boundaries and put in extra effort to excel in my pursuit of a career in fashion design. My time at Ulster University has been a constant source of inspiration, and during my final year, I practically lived in the building, driven by my passion. I eagerly anticipate returning for an artist-in-residency opportunity now in September, as UU has become my creative hub and I never want to leave.

Everyone in Textile Art, Design and Fashion is thrilled for Aoife and super proud of her! Aoife has continually impressed us with the unrelenting passion and tenacity with which she embraces every opportunity that is available to her. We are delighted to offer encouragement and support Aoife as she continues to go from strength to strength in her career.

Dean Liggett, Lecturer in Fashion, Belfast School of Art.
