Help With Your Will

Complimentary Will-Writing Service for Our Alumni and Staff

We are delighted to offer our alumni and staff a free Will-writing service through Kennedy Burchill, specialists in will writing and estate planning. This service ensures your wishes are clearly documented and allows you to include Ulster University in your will with confidence.

Updating Your Will to Include Ulster University

A will is an evolving document that can be easily updated.

If you have already written your will but would like to amend it to include a gift to Ulster University, you can add a codicil.

A codicil is an official alteration and is the only way to make a change to your will after it has been signed and witnessed.  You do not need to use a solicitor or professional will writer to add a codicil, but it is recommended to ensure it is drafted correctly and legally.

To write a codicil, you will need to include:

  • Your name (plus any former name) and address
  • The date your original will was created and the dates of any pre-existing codicils were added
  • Details of the changes you would like to make, such as adding a gift to Ulster University
  • Your signature plus the signatures, names and occupations of two independent witnesses

Once completed, the codicil must be stored safely with your will.

Suggested Wording

The following wording may provide some guidance when you and your solicitor are considering your gift to the University.

In addition to indicating that you wish to support Ulster University you may also wish to identify how you wish your support to be used.

I give to Ulster University (Charity Number - NIC 100166), Cromore Road, Coleraine BT52 1SA, the sum of (insert amount in words) pounds (£ insert figure), or (insert percentage in words) percent (insert figure %), for (indicate how you would like the gift to be used*, eg the Medical Education Fund).

Tax Benefits

As an exempt charity, a gift in your will to the University can be tax-exempt and so could reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable, if the net value of your estate is above the inheritance tax threshold.

Nominating the University as a beneficiary of your pension fund could also provide tax benefits.

We recommend discussing all potential benefits of leaving a legacy gift to the University with your solicitor or financial planner, given that the law varies by country, and inheritance tax is a complex area.
