UU Connects: Ulster University Alumni Celebrated as Future of Creative Industries Takes Centre Stage

On  6 June 2025, at a special UU Connects event hosted in Ulster University’s Academy Restaurant, we welcomed our long standing industry partner, Ardmore Group, to celebrate the impact of UU alumni and explore how education and industry is shaping  the future of innovative communications.

Bringing together Ulster University alumni, current students, and leaders in business and academia, highlighted how creativity, education and collaboration are empowering the next generation of professionals in marketing, PR, advertising, and digital communications.

This event featured a keynote address from Provost Professor Cathy Gormley-Heenan, who praised the role of Ulster graduates in driving change, growth, and inclusion across the sector.

“The communications industry is not just about storytelling – it’s a strategic asset that fuels innovation, drives inclusion, and powers economic growth,” she said. “At Ulster University, we’re proud to educate and support the graduates who are shaping this future, both in Northern Ireland and internationally.”

Delivered in partnership with integrated communications agency Ardmore Group, the event showcased a partnership that has flourished for over 30 years. Ardmore currently provides placements for students on the Communication, Advertising and Marketing (CAM) course, and regularly offers opportunities across its wider group to students from the Belfast School of Art.

A highlight of the evening was a panel discussion chaired by Jim Fitzpatrick of The Irish News, featuring leaders in business and communication including Chris Conway (Translink), Jonathan Martindale (Phoenix Energy), Professor Cathy Gormley-Heenan, and Ardmore Managing Director Miriam Moertl.

Reflecting on the importance of collaboration between universities and industry, Moertl said:

“Ulster graduates are transforming how organisations think, operate and grow – not just here in Northern Ireland, but around the world. Events like this highlight the importance of building strong partnerships that go beyond teaching skills – we’re creating real career pathways.”

John Keane, Founder and Group CEO of Ardmore, added:

“Ulster University graduates are at the heart of our team. Their creativity, passion, and ability to deliver results are what drive our success. This event is a celebration of their journey – and a reminder that investing in people is both the right thing to do and the smart thing to do.”

Taking place in a milestone year for the university, including the 50th anniversary of Ulster University Business School, the event was a fitting celebration of the talent, innovation, and partnerships that define UU’s impact on the creative industries.

The discussion also explored the evolving landscape of the communications workforce, including the impact of artificial intelligence, the importance of diversity and inclusion, and the expectations of emerging professionals.

Ardmore Group, which comprises creative agency Ardmore, PR consultancy LK Communications, digital specialists BFG Digital, and public affairs firm Confluence, employs around 80 staff. As a partner in the global network Worldwide Partners Inc, it continues to offer international insights and opportunities to Ulster graduates while staying firmly committed to developing local talent.

Thank you to everyone at Ardmore for all they do to support our UU students and thank you to everyone who joined us for a night of networking, great food and discussion.
