Our congratulations go to UNESCO Centre PhD Researcher Matt Milliken, who was recently awarded the prestigious UCommunicate Award at Ulster University’s Impact Excellence Awards.
The ceremony, which took place in Titanic Belfast, celebrated the positive impact that Ulster students and academic staff are having on societies and economies, both locally and internationally.
The UCommunicate Award stemmed from a workshop delivered by Bespoke Communications earlier this year. The sessions were designed to improve participant’s presentation skills and their ability to communicate research projects to non-academic audiences.
Matt’s project ‘Teaching Across the Divide’ focuses on teachers in Northern Ireland who have crossed the religious and cultural divide in our society and have taught on ‘the other side’. His work reveals the deployment patterns of teachers in Northern Ireland and the challenges they face in their day-to-day teaching tasks.
Speaking about the Award, Matt said
I guess I was lucky to get a place on the workshop at all - it was aimed at Ulster staff rather than PhD students! So I was more than a little surprised when I was informed that I had made the short list of three for the Impact Excellence Awards. I was obviously delighted when I found out that I was the overall winner!
This award caps a successful year for Matt who also featured as part of the Ulster team that reached the Quarter-Finals of the BBC’s University Challenge.
