About

Industrial biotechnology (also known as white biotechnology) is the application of biotechnology for the sustainable production of products (e.g., chemicals, proteins) of economic value.

It is a key driver of innovation and economic growth and plays a pivotal role in the circular economy helping to address key global challenges.

This course has therefore been designed to introduce students to the key principles, technologies and applications of biotechnology in various industrial sectors, thus equipping them with core knowledge and practical skills for this rapidly evolving and interdisciplinary field which is at an inflection point and poised for significant growth and expansion over the coming decade.

It will also address key societal issues in the field, including regulations and global challenges.

This short course aims to provide students with a comprehensive and critical understanding of the underlying principles, technologies, and applications of biotechnology in various industrial sectors. This will be of value for prospective employers working in this broad field.

Laboratory exercises will also facilitate deeper levels of learning by linking bioreactor technology theory to practical application.

This course will be beneficial to those who wish to pursue a career in biotechnology within an industrial setting (bioprocessing, research, quality control, regulations, sales etc).
