About

The Life and Health Sciences sector in Northern Ireland has identified key skill gaps in biocomputing and programming. This week-long course aims to inspire and train up those interested in learning coding skills in Python and Linux.

This course is designed for those with a primary degree in science or engineering or in a related area. No prior knowledge of maths, computing or statistics is required.

Wednesday 12 February 2025.

Attendance dates

This course requires no campus attendance and is fully online, during Semester 2 in 2025.

​The short course is timetabled for the following days:

  • Wednesday 12 February, 10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Thursday, 13 February, 10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Friday 14 February, 10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Monday 17 February, 10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Tuesday 18 February, 10:00am - 2:00pm

Location

Delivered fully online.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Each day will consist of 2 hours of workshops and 2 hours of tutorials.

Teaching will be in a workshop format.. Suggested reading materials and tutorials will facilitate learning and understanding. Assessment is 100% coursework using on-line submission.

In order to complete the programme, all successful applicants must have access to a broadband connection, a computer or laptop, a webcam and a microphone. A basic-entry PC or laptop would be sufficient.

Career options

On successful completion of this programme students can choose to study further modules and build towards completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development (PgCertPD).

Academic profile

Dr Shukla was was awarded twice (back-to-back) Ulster University’s ‘Distinguished Education Excellence Award’; first time under ‘Professional Practice Innovation’ category in 2018, and a second time under ‘Early Career Educator Category’ in 2019.

This programme consists of one module which focuses on Python programming in Linux environment.

Academic qualifications

Primary degree in science or engineering, or in a related area.

Eligibility

Places are limited and open to applicants who:

  1. are over 18 years of age;
  2. are eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
  3. are ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or
  4. are a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.

Please note you can only be funded by DfE for a maximum of two courses at any one time (including modules to a total of 45 credits per semester - if studying part-time).

  8. In the programme choice dropdown please choose: PG Cred Upskilling SKILLS PT Derry~Londonderry.
  9. Please type the title of the short course you wish to study in the box below the programme choice: Coding Skills for Biologists.
  10. For the question, Are you applying for a funded place on one of the DfE Skills programmes?, select Yes.
  11. Please complete all required application sections.
  12. Ensure your application is complete and then submit.
  13. You will receive a confirmation email that the application has been submitted, please ensure you check your junk mail as well as the inbox of the e-mail address listed on your application.
  14. If you have sent all required information and you have been successful, you will receive an unconditional offer. You must accept this offer via email and confirm acceptance online to secure your place.
  15. If you have not sent all required information, you will be asked to send outstanding items.  If a place is still available and you have met all requirements, you will receive an unconditional offer. You must accept this offer via email and confirm acceptance online to secure your place.

  16. Once your place is accepted, you will receive an enrolment email. You must complete the online enrolment to confirm your place and start your course.
