Professor Dewar Finlay

Head of School of Engineering

Dewar Finlay is a Professor of Electronic Systems and is the Head of the School of Engineering at Ulster. He has previously served as Research Director for the School of Engineering and Interim Associate Dean for Research & Impact within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment.

Dewar’s main area of research interest is in healthcare technology. In particular he is interested in the application of technology in cardiovascular medicine with a particular focus on computerised ECG analysis. He has secured funding to support this research from a number of funding bodies that include: EU (H.2020), RCUK, DEL, InvestNI, HEA. Dewar has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Computing in Cardiology Inc and the International Society for Computerised Electrocardiology. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Electrocardiology and Nature Digital medicine.

He holds a BEng Degree in Electronic Systems and a PhD in Computing – both from Ulster. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His main areas of teaching are in digital signal processing and engineering computing. He previously served as Course Director for Ulster’s postgraduate Health Informatics programmes.

Professor John Byrne

Research Director

John Anthony (Tony) Byrne is a Professor of Photocatalysis in the School of Engineering.  He leads the Clean Technology research theme within the Nanotechnology and Integrated BioEngineering Centre (NIBEC).  Tony's teaching and research focuses on nanotechnology for environmental and energy applications. Tony is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Tony studied biology and chemistry at Ulster at undergraduate level, obtaining a 1^st class honours degree and studied his DPhil in chemistry at Ulster under the supervision of Dr Brian Eggins.  He continued his research career at Ulster and was appointed as a lecturer in the School of Engineering in 2005.  He was rapidly promoted and made Professor in 2012. Tony's research is focused on photocatalytic nanomaterials for use in environmental remediation and renewable energy applications.  He also has an interest the fabrication and characterisation of nanomaterials, focusing mainly on metal oxides.  Tony leads the Photocatalysis Research team at Ulster.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and serves on the committee of the RSC Northern Ireland Section Committee and the Chemical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Interest Group. He is a founding Board Member of the Northern Ireland Science Festival.

Professor Omar Escalona

Professor & Director of the Advanced Cardiovascular Research Centre

Omar Escalona is a Professor in the School of Engineering and a member if the Engineering Research Institute. He is Director of the Centre for Advanced Cardiovascular Research (CACR) at Ulster University. His ongoing research and impact activities are on: atrial fibrillation solutions with improved QALY outcome difference; highly efficient cordless energy supply systems for artificial hearts and VADs; and Connected-Health enabled cardiovascular healthcare services. Since 1986, he has published more than 120 articles in prestigious International Journals and Conference Proceedings, all in the area of cardiovascular research. In 1994, he submitted his first successful European academic networking grant proposal in the ALFA Programme (Project Alfa-Beta) and has had subsequent EU funding for his research since including a recent H2020 MRCA-RISE award entitled WASTCArD.

Omar has held positions as a Lecturer at the Armed Forces Polytechnic University of Venezuela (1986-1988); a Research Assistant at NIBEC, Ulster University (1988-1995) and a tenure track Associate Professor at University Simón Bolívar (USB), Caracas, Venezuela (1995). At USB, his innovation on the use of the Hartley transform for early diagnosis of Chagas disease cardiomyopathy was clinically tested. He gained the Titular Professorship position at USB in 1999 while continuing his research links with Ulster University through the Alfa-Beta Project. In 2001 he was appointed Visiting Professor at Ulster University. In 2006 he became Course Director of the Electronic Engineering course at USB. In 2007 he took up his current position academic post at Ulster in 2007.

Professor Escalona has BSc Hons Degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from University of Surrey (1980); an MSc from University Simón Bolívar (USB), Venezuela (1986) and a PhD at Ulster University (1993). The latter was in the area of high-resolution ECG diagnostic techniques, which resulted in his first innovation patent: “Analysis of Heart Waveforms”, US Patent #5694942, 9/Dec/1997.
