Ulster University is recognised as a Gold Cycle Friendly Employer, reflecting our commitment to promoting cycling as a sustainable, healthy, and accessible mode of transport for staff and students. This accreditation recognises our investment in secure bike parking, shower and changing facilities, and initiatives such as cycle training and awareness campaigns. By supporting cycling, we encourage greener travel, reduce campus emissions, and contribute to a healthier, more active university community.

Ulster University is an accredited Living Wage Employer by the Living Wage Foundation, demonstrating our commitment to fair and equitable pay for all staff. Ulster University is a White Ribbon accredited organisation, demonstrating our commitment to preventing male violence against women and promoting a culture of respect and equality. The Academy Restaurant, located on our Belfast campus and part of Ulster University Business School, was awarded the Green Key certification, an international eco-label recognising excellence in environmental and sustainable practices. This achievement reflects the restaurant’s commitment to responsible resource management, waste reduction, and the promotion of local and sustainable food sourcing. As a student-led establishment, it also plays a key role in embedding sustainability within the learning experience for future hospitality professionals.

Ulster University's Estates Services and Procurement departments are certified to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management. This certification demonstrates our commitment to reducing environmental impact, ensuring compliance, and continually improving our sustainability performance across campus operations.

Ulster University achieved Platinum status in the BITC Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey and was recognised as a Top 40 performer. This achievement demonstrates our leadership and continuous improvement in managing environmental impacts, showcasing our commitment to sustainability and best practice.

Ulster University holds a silver Athena SWAN award, recognising our commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education. The award reflects our ongoing work to address barriers, promote inclusive policies, and create a supportive environment for all staff and students. Twenty of our Schools have been actively involved in Athena SWAN initiatives, developing action plans to improve gender balance, career progression, and workplace culture and hold bronze, silver, or gold awards.

Ulster University’s Student Wellbeing team was recognised with the Autism Impact Award for their commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for autistic students. The award highlights the team’s dedication to raising awareness, improving accessibility, and ensuring that every student can thrive during their time at Ulster.

Ulster University has signed the Translink Better Off Board Charter, demonstrating our commitment to promoting sustainable travel. By pledging to this initiative, we support efforts to reduce carbon emissions, improve accessibility, and encourage staff and students to choose greener ways to travel.

Ulster University has signed the Can’t Buy My Silence Universities Pledge, reaffirming our commitment to fostering a safe, transparent, and supportive environment for all students and staff. By endorsing this pledge, we commit to ensuring that survivors of sexual harassment and assault are heard, respected, and supported. This pledge aligns with our broader dedication to equality, safety, and wellbeing across campus.

Ulster University is an active member of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), the UK and Ireland’s leading network for sustainability in higher education. Through EAUC, the University accesses a wide range of guidance, training, and collaborative opportunities, enabling staff to implement innovative sustainability initiatives, share best practice, and advance its commitment to net-zero, resource efficiency, and responsible campus management.

Ulster University is a member of Business in the Community Northern Ireland (BITC NI), a network that supports organisations in integrating responsible business practices into their operations. Through this membership, the University can engage with local businesses, community projects, and sustainability initiatives, fostering social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and positive community impact across Northern Ireland.

Ulster University is a member of the Northern Ireland Resources Network (NIRN), a collaborative platform that brings together organisations across the region to share expertise, resources, and best practices in sustainability and resource efficiency. The University engages with students and staff to promote circular economy initiatives, reduce waste, and enhance sustainable practices across its campuses and operations, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship and community impact.

Ulster University is a member of the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Network, which connects universities worldwide to share data, strategies, and best practices in sustainability performance. Membership allows the University to benchmark its environmental, social, and governance initiatives, collaborate with other institutions, and enhance its global reputation for sustainability leadership in teaching, research, and campus operations.

Ulster University is a member of the North West Universities Purchasing Consortium (NWUPC), which drives responsible and sustainable procurement across the higher education sector. Through NWUPC, we are also affiliated with Electronics Watch, an independent monitoring organisation that works to protect the rights of workers in global electronics supply chains. Our membership ensures that the products and services we buy support ethical, transparent, and sustainable practices.
