The latest episode of Ulster University Business Schools’ (UUBS)  podcast, The Business of Possibility, explores the transformative impact of ‘Skill Up’, on both individuals and businesses across Northern Ireland.

Funded by the Department for the Economy (DfE) and the Northern Ireland Office, Skill Up is a fully funded skills programme providing funded places on a range of accredited courses, focusing on key skills identified by industry, to help people re-train and re-skill.

Thousands of people across the region have already benefited from the courses to date.

In its latest episode, host Wendy Austin spoke to Graeme Wilkinson, Director of Skills at the Department for the Economy, Joanne Ferguson, Director of CME Group, Emer Maguire, award-winning Musical Comedian and Sean O Fithcheallaigh, Design Engineer at Sensata Technologies, about how the initiative was supporting career development and business.

On the podcast, Emer Maguire, graduate of the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development (Enabling Business Recovery) course shared how the programme learnings gave her the confidence to launch a new business:

Two weeks ago, I launched a new business out of nowhere for campervan rentals…  All the things you need to know, like becoming a limited company, getting sponsorship, I feel confident enough to go for all those things because of the course… It has been really helpful for me in going after what I want and feeling like I’ve got a bit of confidence and gravitas behind that, whereas before I would have just felt like I didn’t really know what I was doing, so it was a great course, and it has really helped me.

Applications are opened for the latest round of funded postgraduate, undergraduate and short courses at Ulster University, with over 250 places available on a range of business, leadership and computing courses, worth up to £4,000.

Courses focus on in-demand priority skills and knowledge identified by DfE skills and local employers and include; Postgraduate Certificate Business Analysis and Consulting, Postgraduate Certificate Artificial Intelligence, Postgraduate Certificate Professional Software Development, Advanced Certificate Management Practice: Transformational Management in a Digital World and a range of short courses in areas such as Business Sustainability and Innovation, Strategic Marketing and more.
