About the Department of Global Business and Enterprise

Today’s business world is global and ever-changing, characterised by intense competition and instant communication. Managers have become globally mobile as domestic markets open up for foreign investments.  Innovative communications such as social networks are having profound implications for businesses seeking opportunities in global markets.

At the Department of Global Business and Enterprise we provide courses which recognise these challenges and opportunities. We prepare our graduates to make an impact on the business sector at regional, national and international levels. Our courses are contemporary and imbued with an integrated global business element.  We have a strong internationally recognised research team and our business collaborations constantly enrich and inform our teaching, delivering on educational innovation, and reflecting good domestic and global business practice.

The Department of Global Business and Enterprise is based at our Magee campus and is one of four departments within the Ulster University Business School.

Our aim is to deliver nationally and internationally relevant business relevant research which both informs and enhances our teaching and is reflected throughout our wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Our courses provide students with a quality educational experience, with a focus on ‘applied learning’. We produce highly employable graduates who demonstrate business and entrepreneurial acumen, innovation, global citizenship, professionalism and academic strengths. Students have the opportunity to develop and apply their skills and make a meaningful contribution to the socio economic fabric here in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Impact of experience

We have extensive global reach, regional engagement and given our unique location, cross border engagement.  Our graduates often occupy senior positions globally and our courses are designed to make a real impact both for business and for our students development.  Our academic staff are professionally qualified and bring significant managerial and international experience to their academic work.  We combine the best of academic knowledge and a supportive student environment with real world experience through our strong industry partnerships and global links.

The Department has well developed links to prestigious global institutions including Babson College  in Boston, Harvard Business School , Philadelphia University; Ivey Business School at Western University, Canada; Hubei Normal University, China, DUFE University, China; University of Bergamo, Italy and Kempten Hochschule, Germany).

In addition, students from the Department have the opportunity to undertake international study opportunities, international study visits and international work placements.

Strengths

A distinctive strength of the Department is our research and practitioner informed teaching approach combined with a focus on embedding international business into every aspect of our teaching. The Department supports student employability, and promotes student placement opportunities, both international and regional,  as well as the opportunity to engage  with live project work. We use up to date educational technology and approaches, such as, d.thinking techniques.

Research

At Global Business and Enterprise the academic staff undertake nationally and internationally recognised research, for example: operations and supply chain management, SME internationalisation and growth, (international) entrepreneurship,  business and public-sector innovation, digital approaches to business and mobile banking.

We are actively involved in a wide range of collaborative work with businesses through consultancy, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), FUSION projects and Innovation Vouchers, for example.  Research teams within the Department have attracted substantial European, Research Council, Enterprise Ireland and Innovate UK funding and the Business School was ranked 7th in the UK for the impact of our research (REF 2014).

Courses

Many of our courses are accredited by professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM),), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland  (ICAI), and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

We also have strong links to the Institute of Export and International Trade, a leading authority in best practice and competence for businesses trading globally.
