Due to ongoing COVI9-19 restrictions the HPAT-Ulster 2021 exam is being held ONLINE via remote proctoring from 22–23 January 2021. Close of late registrations is 5pm GMT on 11 January 2020.

Note: There is only one test sitting of HPAT-Ulster each year.

The test has been designed in consultation with Ulster University to assess a range of attributes considered important to the study and later practice of the health professions.

The test is used in the selection process for entry into the following courses:

It is designed to complement academic achievement, by providing assessment of skills in the areas of reasoning, understanding and working with people, and written communication. These skills have been identified as important for a competent health professional. HPAT-Ulster is not based on any curriculum or body of knowledge and presumes no particular field or discipline of prior study.

HPAT-Ulster has a strong focus on general skills and personal abilities. It does not test knowledge of the basic sciences.

Note: Registering to take HPAT-Ulster does not constitute an application for admission to Ulster University. In addition to registering for HPAT-Ulster, candidates would need to have submitted an application to UCAS by 15 January 2021 in the usual way.

Below are answers to common queries we have been receiving lately so you may find this useful.

Why does UU use HPAT?

UU uses the independent HPAT test as an independent means of selecting students in highly competitive, sought after and over-subscribed programmes. The test also serves to reassure candidates of their suitability and skills match for their chosen programme of study in the allied health professions and supports them to embark upon their course with confidence.

Why is there a price increase this year?

In the context of the pandemic, ACER, the independent company that runs the test, has had to move the testing provision online. The cost increase has not been applied by UU and is beyond our control. The increased cost relates to the requirements for enhanced security and verification of candidates sitting the test, to ensure a fair and valid online process. This provides assurances to both the University and to candidates.

What if candidates don’t have access to the technology to participate in the test online?

For any candidate without suitable technology to participate, we will arrange for them to take the test on-campus in a safe, secure and appropriate location. Although most of our teaching is currently delivered online, some teaching in lab and studio-based subject is taking place on campus, supported at all time by rigorous risk assessments. Extensive measures are in place to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for any staff, students and visitors on campus.

Why could you not have put something else in place this year?

We recognise that many candidates will have already invested both time and money in preparing for the HPAT test, including securing access to past papers for practice purposes. It would be unfair to those candidates to withdraw the test at short notice in this recruitment cycle for 2021 entry, given the commitment they have already shown to their chosen degree programme. The test remains an important element of the selection process, however we are currently reviewing options for an equally suitable alternative for future years.
