Danielle McDowell is an Emerging Talent Advisor at GRAHAM. We spoke to Danielle and some of GRAHAM's Apprentices earlier this month to find out more about the organisation, and what it's like to do an Apprenticeship with a leading employer in the Built Environment sector.
What should people considering an apprenticeship with GRAHAM know about you?
GRAHAM has been shaping the built environment for over two centuries. Since 1778, we’ve grown into a leading name in construction, civil engineering, interior fit-out, facilities management, and investments. Today, with more than 2,000 employees across the UK and Ireland, we deliver complex, multimillion-pound projects that make a real difference to communities.
At GRAHAM, we understand our successes, culture, and history are all built on our people and believe the next generation of talent is the foundation for our future. That’s why we were proud to become the first UK company awarded Investors in People Wellbeing Platinum, recognising our outstanding commitment to supporting social, physical, and psychological wellbeing. We’re also a Platinum Member of The 5% Club, with over 10% of our workforce on structured career development programmes.
As a GRAHAM apprentice, you’ll ‘Deliver Lasting Impact’ for the communities we work in and gain hands-on experience, working alongside experts who are passionate about sharing their knowledge. You’ll also have support and guidance from our Emerging Talent Advisors. From day one you’ll lay the foundations for a dynamic career with excellent opportunities for fast progression and flexibility in the pathway you chose.
At GRAHAM, we don’t just offer jobs-we create lifelong careers where your ideas matter, achievements are celebrated, and you’re given the environment to succeed.
We asked GRAHAM's apprentices about what a day in the life looks like. Here's how they responded:
'As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor in GRAHAM’s Civil Engineering division, I spend most of my time reviewing costs, updating collaborative documents, and supporting the Commercial team with day-to-day tasks. No two days are the same and I enjoy a mix of working on-site and in the office. This balance of practical experience and continuous learning makes every day both challenging and rewarding.'
'As an Apprentice Cost Manager, my week blends learning with real-world experience: one day at college, two working from home, and two in the office. A typical day might involve calculating building areas using CADMeasure, assigning materials, or producing take-off bills in CATO for our estimating team. My team is incredibly supportive, always ready to answer questions about my coursework while helping me build knowledge and confidence.'
'As an Apprentice Pre-Construction Manager, every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities. I’m involved in design review meetings, preparing Tender and PQQ submissions, and ensuring tenders are submitted on time. Working alongside our experienced site engineers and participating in site visits gives me insight into how early planning decisions shape real projects, and working alongside experienced engineers builds my confidence.'
'GRAHAM’s early careers development programmes give me the chance to travel and explore different departments, while emphasizing collaboration, communication, and real-world project simulation, allowing me to experience the full project lifecycle.'
GRAHAM have clearly invested a lot in their Apprentices. What do they mean for your organisation?
At GRAHAM, apprentices are more than learners, they’re key contributors to our success. They bring fresh energy, new ideas, and up-to-date knowledge that strengthen our teams across every division. This fresh perspective helps us innovate, solve challenges, and continually improve how we deliver projects for our clients and communities.
Our apprentices’ enthusiasm and commitment inspire progress, their willingness to learn and adapt ensures we stay ahead in a fast-changing industry. By combining academic learning with hands-on experience, they help us deliver smarter, more sustainable solutions. It’s why 93% of our apprentices stay with GRAHAM after completing their studies, and why 15% of our workforce is currently on earn-and-learn programmes, a clear sign of our commitment to developing talent.
At GRAHAM, we know our future depends on developing talent. That’s why we invest in apprentices, offering structured training, mentorship, and clear career pathways. Their success is our success and together, we’re building a stronger, more innovative business.
We asked Danielle and GRAHAM's apprentices for one bit of advice for applicants who are considering an apprenticeship.
Danielle said:
'Our advice would be to remember that employers don’t expect you to know everything at the interview stage. Most apprentices come straight from third level education, so experience isn’t the priority, we want to understand who you are, what motivates you, and why you’re eager to learn. Be genuine, honest, and show enthusiasm.
It’s worthwhile researching the company you’re interested in and their core values, understanding what they stand for not only strengthens your application but helps you decide if the organisation is the right fit for you.
Ultimately, apprenticeships are about potential. If you’re curious, willing to learn, and ready to bring your own fresh perspective, you’ll be a valuable addition to any team.'
GRAHAM's apprentices said:
'Go ahead and do it, you get the best of both worlds. A degree level apprenticeship incorporates elements of both uni-life and work-life. It gives you both hands-on experience in the construction industry, which you can apply directly to your uni studies while also earning a salary. Although it can be challenging at times, it’s worth the effort.'
'An apprenticeship gives you the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience from day one while working on real projects and tackling real challenges. This exposure builds confidence and practical skills while also supporting your classroom knowledge as you see the theory in action. You’ll meet professionals across the business, grow your network, and open doors for future opportunities. Ultimately, an apprenticeship lets you learn and earn, giving you a head start and setting you up for success.'
'Take the time to explore the full range of apprenticeship opportunities available as there are far more options than most people realise. Whether you’re aiming for a specific career path or prefer a broader programme that allows you to discover what you enjoy, there’s something out there for you.'
What can applicants expect from GRAHAM's application process?
'Our application process is designed to be accessible and straightforward. Vacancies typically open in September and close in January for apprentices hoping to begin their studies in the following academic year. Applications are submitted via the GRAHAM Academy webpage, where you’ll provide a comprehensive CV that clearly demonstrates how you meet the essential and, if applicable, desirable criteria, along with completing an online monitoring form. Depending on the role, some candidates may be asked to complete additional assessments. Shortlisted applicants are invited to an interview that focuses on both technical knowledge and professional skills. Following this stage, we make our final selection for our highly sought-after degree apprenticeship roles.'
