Ulster Presents and British Council welcome applications for a Student Fellowship at the 2026 Venice Biennale of Art.

Ulster Presents has partnered with British Council and the Belfast School of Art to participate in the Venice Fellowships Programme at the British Pavilion during the 2026 Venice Biennale of Art.

One student from Belfast School of Art, enrolled on Year 3 BA Fine Art or MFA Fine Art, will be selected to participate as a Fellow at the British pavilion during the 2026 Venice Biennale of Art.

The Fellowship includes a travel grant of £3,300 to cover transport, accommodation and living costs for one month in Venice, an opportunity to develop research or a creative project and a role supporting the artist - Lubaina Himid's installation, at the British Pavilion between May and November 2026.

Known for a pioneering practice which addresses themes of race, history, feminism, cultural memory and identity, Lubaina Himid frequently employs storytelling and historical research to challenge dominant Eurocentric narratives and highlight the overlooked contributions of Black figures in Western history.

Venice Biennale 2024 artwork install by Sonya Boyce presents four widescreen TV monitors featuring four female vocalists singing at microphones in different studios. The monitors are mounted on walls covered in a kaleidscopic pattern of colourful geometric shapes and foregrounded with a number of geometric gold scultpures placed on the floor. The Venice Fellowship Programme is a key part of the British Council’s presence in Venice, supporting the exhibition programme as well as being a platform for the development of new creative careers and future leaders. The Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for emerging creatives to represent the UK on an international level whilst broadening their perspective, making connections and developing their creative practice.

We are looking for a candidate who is flexible, generous, people-concerned, an active listener, collaborative, inclusive, reliable and is at the start of a career committed to and passionate about the arts. Candidates also need to have an idea of a potential project proposal they would like to develop while in Venice. Participation as a Fellow also requires additional commitment to training and induction for the role in advance of the residency. More detail about the opportunity, eligibility and selection criteria is available within the attached documents below.
