What Is Personalised Medicine?
Personalised medicine (also called precision medicine or stratified medicine) is a modern approach to healthcare that tailors medical treatment to each individual patient - rather than using a one‑size‑fits‑all approach.
Instead of treating everyone the same, personalised medicine groups patients based on factors such as their genetics, biology, lifestyle, medical history, and how they respond to treatments. This helps healthcare professionals choose treatments that are more likely to work for each person.
The goal of personalised medicine is simple: the right treatment, for the right person, at the right time.
How does Personalised Medicine work?
Personalised medicine uses biological markers (biomarkers) - measurable indicators found in blood, tissue, or DNA - alongside medical imaging and clinical data. Together, this information helps doctors predict a person's risk of developing certain diseases, diagnose conditions earlier and more accurately, select the most effective treatment and avoid treatments that are unlikely to work, and reduce side effects and unnecessary interventions.
For example, two patients with the same diagnosis may receive different treatments based on how their bodies are likely to respond.
Why is Personalised Medicine important?
Personalised medicine is a global healthcare priority for doctors, hospitals, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and patients. It has the potential to:
- Improve treatment success rates
- Reduce trial‑and‑error prescribing
- Lower the risk of adverse side effects
- Detect diseases earlier, when they are easier to treat
- Make healthcare more efficient and cost‑effective
By focusing on the individual, personalised medicine helps move healthcare from reactive treatment to predictive and preventative care.
Student perspective
Employability Events
Connecting students with industry partners
Generously supported by the Department for the Economy, the School of Medicine Personalised Medicine division hosted two employability events for industry employers to showcase the wide-ranging careers available to graduates in the sector.
The events allowed students to make connections with employers, understand the opportunities available within the sector, and raise awareness about the importance of skills development.
Delivering for Derry
Employability Fair
Supported by the Department for the Economy, it was wonderful seeing our students making connections and learning about the career opportunities available in the sector at a recent Personalised Medicine Employability Fair.
