In the lead up to results day
How to support your family member
After completing all their exams, your son or daughter will probably want to relax for a while.
It’s a big change, knowing that school is coming to an end, and they will be progressing as an adult to the next stage of their life.
Be supportive, and also talk to them about how they can make the most of their summer to prepare for the next steps.
If you want to talk to someone about your family member’s situation
Please remember that we are unable to discuss your son or daughter’s status without their permission, but we will be able to advise on:
- what courses are available
- what the entry requirements are for those courses

On results day
Support and encourage
On results day, students can collect their results after 8am from their school or college.
This can be fun and stressful.
They’ll be conscious of the results of friends as well as their own results so don’t underestimate the importance of your support and encouragement.

UCAS Hub
UCAS Hub will re-open at 8.15
At 8.15, UCAS Hub will re-open, and your son or daughter will be able to check their university offers.
If they have met the conditions of their firm offer, this will be shown in UCAS Hub.
UCAS Hub Status
Showing as pending
If your son or daughter did not meet the conditions of their offer, we may not be able to offer them a place immediately.
Please don't panic as it can take us a few days to determine the availability on each course, but if the grades they received are substantially lower than what they have been asked for, please have a look at our results and clearing webpages as we may have an alternative available course that matches the grades they have received.
If they find something that interests them, please complete the enquiry form and a member of our Admissions Team will be in contact.
Showing a Clearing number
If your son or daughter didn’t meet the grades of their offers or has declined all their offers, they can still find a course through Clearing.
Don’t panic!
Clearing is a way of matching students with courses which still have places, and every year around 70,000 students find a university place this way.
Clearing is open from 5 July, and you can visit Ulster University’s results and clearing website to see what courses are on offer.

Firm choice offer holders
If you have made Ulster University your firm choice
If you have applied to Ulster University, have made us your firm choice, and have met the conditions of your offer, we will email you with details of what to do next.
Don’t panic if your status hasn’t been updated - it can sometimes take a while to refresh.
Just keep checking back to UCAS Hub.
Offered a place and want to accept
Congratulations!
If their place is with Ulster University we will send them an email asking them to accept or decline their place.
We’ll then send instructions on what else needs to be done.
Offered a place and want to decline
They can decline their place and be released into Clearing by using the ‘decline my place’ button in their application.
We strongly recommend speaking to your firm choice university before making this decision to talk through your options and other available courses.
Once you decline your firm choice place on UCAS, any arrangements you have with accommodation or scholarships will also be cancelled.

Insurance choice offer holders
Offered a place and want to accept
Congratulations!
They have a place on their insurance choice course.
This means that they didn’t meet the entry conditions for their firm choice.
If their place is with Ulster University and they want to accept, we will send them an email asking them to accept or decline their place.
We’ll then send them instructions on what else needs to be done.
Offered a place and want to decline
If they have been offered a place on their insurance choice course, this means that they didn’t meet the entry conditions for their firm choice.
If they want to decline this place and be released into Clearing, they must use the ‘decline my place’ button in their application.

Being made an offer for another course
Check out our clearing courses
If they didn’t meet the conditions of their offer with Ulster University, but we have a similar course with a different grade requirement which they meet, we will offer them a place on that course.
If they want to accept their place, they can follow the instructions in the email to accept or decline it.
If they decline the offer, they will be released in to Clearing.

Unexpected results
Have a Plan B
It’s always good to have a Plan B in case their results turn out differently than expected.
They may do better than expected, opening up new possibilities, change their mind about where they want to study, or miss the conditions of their offer.
Having a Plan B, such as creating a list of alternative degree and university choices, will allow you to quickly check available places on results day.
