Global Leadership Programme – Johannesburg 2023

“I am excited to see how we can build on this to create a more sustainable and inclusive future for South Africa. I will definitely be back!”

Activities

I recently had the privilege of attending a four-day Common Purpose programme focused on overcoming crisis by advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals in cities around South Africa. Hosted by the University of Johannesburg in collaboration with Ulster University the programme included immersions into businesses, character building exercises, cafe style conversations, and Q&As with industry professionals.

Problems and solutions

Working in groups, we each made a unique solution. My group and I focused on graduate unemployment by proposing a programme for first-year students that includes part time work and a placement year working in underdeveloped communities throughout university. Our proposal aimed to provide sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all, in line with the UN SDGs.

Experiencing a new culture

Throughout the programme, we also learned about African culture, participated in bonding experiences with University of Johannesburg students, and shared fascinating exchanges with professionals in their areas. The experience culminated in a final project and presentation where we proposed solutions to real-world challenges.
