Catherine - University of Dubuque, Iowa, United States

"Study USA was an experience I will cherish forever, and I am forever grateful for the lifelong memories I have made. I am so thankful for the opportunity I was given to embrace a new culture and for how it shaped me into a confident and proud young woman."

Memorable Moments

Throughout my time studying in the United States, I have made endless amounts of unforgettable memories. I have made lifelong friends from all over the world, traveled to places I had always wanted to visit, and experienced the American college experience I had always dreamed of. Becoming a Student Ambassador was a highlight for me. I was a role model for my college by welcoming prospective students and giving them tours around campus. This allowed me to meet new people and build my confidence. Another key highlight from my study year was being able to share my Irish culture through Irish dancing. I took it upon myself to host performances and events as well as dance alongside multiple different Irish bands who were on their American tour. I also helped out at the local Irish dance school in Dubuque. This allowed me to express my culture and become more independent, open-minded, and resilient.

Navigating Campus Life and Culture

There were many similarities, such as the support you receive from mentors and the importance each country places on a good education, but in saying this, I did notice many cultural differences. One difference was how small each class was and how class participation was essential. While studying at an American college, I realised the importance of living on campus to really embrace all university life by attending daily sporting events, activities, and clubs. As class sizes were a lot smaller in America, class participation and discussion in class were expected. In most classes, this class participation was put towards students' final grades. As most students lived on campus, there was a strong sense of community and team spirit. I also noticed big differences in food portions, social interactions, and the scale of everything, from sporting events to stores. Having experienced both cultures has given me a greater understanding and appreciation for both American and Irish culture.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Resilience

A big challenge as an Irish student studying in America was adapting to a new education system as well as living away from family and friends for the first time. Managing the increased workload alongside adjusting to the cultural changes was definitely challenging at first. I started to overcome this challenge by keeping organised, asking for help when needed, and making use of all the support and resources my college had to offer. I also attended loads of campus activities and events, which helped me meet new people and make meaningful friendships that helped me settle in a lot quicker. By the end of my study abroad, I have become a more confident, adaptable, and independent individual.

Lifelong Friendship

I found my flock of people early on as everyone was so welcoming, friendly, and easy to chat to in my first few weeks. By living on campus, I was able to attend loads of different events my university had to offer, which allowed me to meet and engage with new people every single day. I have gained friendships for life with both American and international students, many of whom I'm still in contact with. The relationships I developed were one of the most rewarding parts of my Study USA experience.

Traveling Across the United States

During my time spent in the United States, I had the privilege to travel to multiple different places around the country that I had always dreamed of visiting. I was able to explore some of the most recognisable cities and landmarks with friends, making memories to last a lifetime. A key memory of mine was experiencing Thanksgiving in Chicago with fellow Study USA students. Travelling to places like New York, Orlando, Nashville, the California Coast, and more allowed me to learn about the country's diversity, broaden my perspectives, and make unforgettable memories beyond my studies.

Top Highlights of My Journey

My top experiences would definitely be the friendships I made with students from all over the world, travelling across the United States, attending college games, experiencing campus life, becoming a student ambassador for my college, and finally being able to represent my culture through Irish dancing. One main highlight for me was performing at the Irish Hooley festival with the Irish band The Kilkennys. I embraced every opportunity I had and got to experience the American college life I had always dreamed of.

Tips for You

I would encourage anyone who is thinking of applying to just do it - it will change your life forever. Putting yourself out there and stepping outside of your comfort zone helps shape the person you will become, as well as letting you learn and experience a whole new culture. Never be afraid to meet new people, as they could become your new best friends, and never hesitate to ask for support when you need it. Study USA is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will help you grow both academically and personally; it's something you will remember for the rest of your life!
