Dunluce Castle

Perched dramatically on a cliff edge overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Dunluce Castle is one of Northern Ireland’s most recognisable historic landmarks.

The medieval ruins tell the story of the powerful families who once lived here, while the castle’s spectacular coastal setting makes it a memorable place to explore. Visitors can discover the castle’s history, explore the remains and enjoy views across the North Coast.

Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne

Set high on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, Mussenden Temple is one of the Causeway Coast’s best-known landmarks. The circular temple forms part of Downhill Demesne, a historic National Trust estate with gardens, walking routes and historic buildings to explore.

The combination of architecture, history and coastal scenery makes the estate a popular destination for students, visitors and photographers.

Coleraine Museum

Coleraine Museum at Coleraine Town Hall is open for over 6 months of the year and features vibrant temporary exhibitions, events and talks inspired by the rich museum collection. Here, you can begin to explore ‘Irish History Starts Here’ with the story of Mountsandel – the first known settlement in Ireland nearly 10,000 years ago, and the history of Coleraine as the first Planted town of the official plantation over 400 years ago.

Heritage beyond the landmarks

History can be found throughout the towns and countryside of the Causeway Coast. Historic churches, traditional town centres, memorials and former transport routes offer glimpses into the region’s past.

Many heritage sites are close to walking routes and coastal landscapes, making it easy to combine exploring local history with discovering the outdoors.

A region shaped by history and heritage

From medieval ruins and historic estates to museums and local heritage sites, the Causeway Coast offers plenty of ways to discover the region’s past.

For students at Ulster University’s Coleraine campus, exploring these places is a chance to experience local heritage, discover new places and learn more about the area they call home during their studies.
