Dr Darragh Morgan
Violinist
PhD by Published Work, School of Arts and Humanities
Earlier this month Irish violinist, Darragh Morgan, released his latest works "For Violin and Electronics Vol ll'. Described by BBC Radio 3's Record Review as one of the most adventurous violinists around, Darragh's new album is a compilation of an exceptional roster of musicians including Professor of Music and Associate Dean Frank Lyons MBE.
Darragh writes, "Frank Lyons and I met way back in 1998. He had written one of the first ever pieces I played for violin and electronics called Blitzed! which subtly and creatively combined cells of musical material within room for improvisation, using computer software to react to my live violin material in real time. A number of years later through discussing our mutual admiration for Jimi Hendrix the idea of a work encompassing material recorded from my violin, manipulated through software, led to the premiere of Dazed by the Haze at Electric Spring in Huddersfield and soon after a studio recording. I am over the moon to include music by my former PhD supervisor as the closing track on this new album alongside:
- British-Iranian composer and turntablist, Shiva Feshareki
- Pioneering sound artist, Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner
- Nigerian ambient violist, Ibukun Sunday, and
- The late, great composer and electronic musician, Mira Calix, to whom the album is dedicated.
Throughout his career, Darragh has recorded 75+ albums of chamber music, many of which have received Diapason d’Or and Gramophone Awards. He is violinist in the renowned Fidelio Trio and a former member of The Smith Quartet. Darragh plays an 1848 violin by Giuseppe Rocca and has a PhD in Music from Ulster University.
