The Rome Statute of the ICC establishes a formal relationship between the UNSC and ICC that has the potential to be harnessed as a dedicated pathway for ending impunity for sexual and gender-based violence and offering increased visibility to women's experiences of conflict. However, the question remains whether the dynamic proves itself to be an indispensable space of action, activism, and attention. Can the rhetoric around gender justice match the institutionalized reality? Provocative thoughts will be offered that dissect the commonalities and divergences within the context of the UNSC and ICC relationship and the debilitating assumptions and gaps within.

Dr Yassin Brunger is Lecturer in Human Rights, QUB School of Law.

This event is part of the WPS@20 seminar hosted by the Ulster University Transitional Justice Institute to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security by the United Nations Security Council.
