About

This module covers the theories and applications of systems relevant to mechanical engineering control. Students learn to perform Laplace transforms, system modelling, assess, and analyse system responses. Laboratory experiments using the Matlab simulation packages help to bridge the theoretical and practical aspects of the study topic.

Successful students will be able to:

  1. Identify the significance and relevance of systems and associated control in mechanical engineering.
  2. Develop mathematical formulations for linear models (and linearised non-linear systems) using classical modelling techniques.
  3. Apply analytical techniques to evaluate system response, dynamic analysis, and stability criteria.
  4. Apply S-plane and Routh-Hurwitz techniques to determine stability of a system

Semester 1 (12 weeks).

Course start date: 23rd September 2024

Attendance

Students will be required to attend class approximately 4 hrs per week.

Location

This course is delivered on the Belfast campus.

Teaching and Assessment

The course delivery will comprise lectures, which are supported by tutorials and practical exercises using computer-aided software packages such as Matlab to extend the theoretical aspects of the syllabus. The module is blended.

Two Class Tests, each one hour long, to be conducted during the middle and end of the semester, respectively. Feedback will be given according to the University guidelines.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have:

Pass HND with overall Merit in an Engineering, Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering subject to include a Merit in either Level 4 or Level 5 Analytical Methods, Level 4 Engineering Maths or Level 5 Further Maths module. GCSE Maths Grade C/4 or an alternative Mathematics qualification acceptable to the University is also required.

OR

Pass Foundation Degree in a relevant subject area with an overall mark of 50% and minimum 50% in all taught level 5 modules and 50% in the Level 4 Mathematics module within the Foundation Degree. GCSE Maths Grade C/4 or an alternative Mathematics qualification acceptable to the University is also required.

Eligibility

Places are limited and open to applicants who:

  1. are over 18 years of age;
  2. are eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
  3. are ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or
  4. are a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.
