Ulster University hosted a special event to celebrate Kate O’Connor, who made history this summer as the first Irish multi-event athlete to win gold at the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

Kate said: “Winning gold was unforgettable, but it’s the support around me that makes it possible to excel, on the track and in my degree. I’m incredibly proud to represent Ulster University and Irish athletics on the world stage.”

She was joined by special guest Dame Mary Peters to celebrate her success. Join us in congratulating Kate on her history-making achievement; a standout moment for Irish sport and the Ulster University community.

Tyrone Ladies GAA Intermediate All-Ireland Champions

Massive congratulations to Tyrone Ladies GAA who defeated the Laois side to win the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship at Croke Park earlier this month. The Tyrone squad includes no less than 11 Ulster University students and graduates. Congratulations:

No stranger to 'Graduates in the Spotlight', Matthew has racked up even more golfing accolades while representing Ireland at a range of both national and international golfing events this summer.

He excelled as part of the strong contingent of Irish players competing at The Amateur Championship at Royal St. George’s and Royal Cinque Ports, and competing in the European Amateur Team Championship at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.

Ulster University Performance Sport Scholar Nick Griggs claimed a superb silver medal in the U23 European 5,000m final, crossing the line in an impressive 13:45.80.

His outstanding performance secured a podium finish on the European stage, showcasing his dedication, talent and competitive spirit. A remarkable achievement for Nick as he continues to go from strength to strength in his athletics career.

Kathryn Morton

BSc Physiotherapy and Performance and Performance Sport Scholar

Congratulations to Ulster University Performance Sports Scholar, Kathryn Morton, who has been selected to represent GB at the 2025 European 3D Archery Championships in Serbia in Autumn this year.

Kathryn competes for both Ulster University and her home club, Ballyvally Archers. Kathryn has competed in four European Championships and two World Championships to date, and we are excited to see her add another string to her bow at the 2025 European Championships. Good luck, Kathryn!
