As the Fine Art Masters students of Belfast School of Art and Design find themselves halfway
through their final year, this showcase provides a glimpse into the culmination of experimentation
and research they’ve undertaken throughout the course so far. Prologue being an interim
exhibition, gives the artists freedom to experiment and allows the works to show various degrees
of resolution thereby opening up possibilities surrounding processes and playful modes of display.
In order to accommodate and give breathing room to the work of these thirteen artists, Prologue
will be a show exhibited in two parts. Created mostly in the same studio setting, with spaces side
by side, this group show unites the work collectively and holds space for unexpected connections
to emerge between the pieces. The work in this show is rich in a diverse range of methodologies
and materials; ranging from large-scale painting on canvas, charcoal drawings emerging from
erasure, sculpture through model-making, textiles and weaving, installations involving natural and
collected materials as well as experimental moving image.
These multi-disciplinary processes allow the work to be individually distinct from one another
visually while concerns and themes emerging from the work overlap, creating dialogues on ideas
of materiality, temporality, memory and both personal and universal narratives. Prologue is an
introduction to practicing balance and co-existence by cooperating as a collective, working
towards a shared final show.
