This talk will open up the study of admonishments as interactional objects. It will consider how admonishments in family mealtimes can be identified and how they are related to, and distinguishable from, requests, directives and threats, and from forms of advice giving.

How do admonishments play a role in behavioural management and how do they use (mundane) moral assessments?

How do admonishments display speakers' orientations to actions as intentional or not?

How can they be seen as part of a broader project of socialisation?
