Aine McKillop PhD FIBMS SFHEA, Professor of Biomedical Sciences, presents as part of the Inaugural Professorial Lecture series in Lecture Theatre 8, Ulster University, Coleraine campus.

Optimal healthcare to challenge emerging and established global epidemics, like diabetes, is fundamentally underpinned by effective education of students, employees, and the public. In clinical practice, diabetes remains one of the most dominant pervasive multifaceted healthcare conditions. A major challenge is how best to ensure that continued advances in research and innovation inform both education and clinical practice. This can only be addressed by ensuring that generations of university graduates are equipped with cutting-edge knowledge and skills, achieved by research-led teaching and learning in an engaging and supportive environment. Such a transformative advanced educational experience involves an approach where the learner is exposed to the latest applied knowledge and professional practice.

This lecture will explore how a strategically evolving higher education learning environment that includes experiential research-led learning will not only enhance the student experience and graduate outcomes, but importantly will put this at the core of patient care. This can only be achieved by encouraging students to see themselves as researchers throughout their learning process at University and beyond. Using diabetes as an exemplar, this lecture will showcase how research-led learning, directly informed by personal research into diabetes diagnostics and therapeutics at Ulster, can be embedded into university curricula driving forward an integrated approach to the 'research-teaching nexus' and delivering the highest quality student experience at Ulster. This approach has yielded successes in student attitudes, approaches, and behaviours, which translates into practices in research, industry, and clinical settings, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes.

The response will be given by Professor Patrick Bell, Regional Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

This event is open to everyone.
