Imagine Festival: the legacy of colonialism panel discussion

The Pat Finucane Centre (PFC) has been working in partnership with the Museum of British Colonialism (MofBC) – an online archive created to gather, share, and comment on British colonial rule worldwide. The Museum has produced a documentary and exhibition which are intended to help those interested learn more about true nature of British colonial rule worldwide. Come along to this event view the exhibition (running all week) and listen to our key guest speakers on the subject of the ‘Legacy of Colonialism’.

The Museum of British Colonialism has been researching the impact of British Military repression in Kenya against the Mau Mau guerilla movement. Brigadier Frank Kitson, who arrived in Belfast in the early 1970’s, first developed his counter-insurgency strategies against the Mau Mau in Kenya. The PFC has also been researching the linkages between military policies used in Northern Ireland in the early 1970’s and military policies in Cyprus, Kenya, Malaya, Aden and elsewhere.

At the panel discussion, speakers from PFC (Paul O'Connor), TJI (Bill Rolston),  the Museum of British Colonialism (Luna Diaz) will discuss the legacy of colonialism and the failure to reflect the impact of colonialism both in the body politic and within education structures. The MofBC will also air their documentary Operation Legacy (30 mins). Both the PFC and MofBC will have an exhibition on this theme running from Monday through Saturday at An Cultúrlann during the festival.
