Leadership and Management Development

Our goal is to actively promote and enable the effective implementation of our Five and Fifty Strategy via a portfolio of distributive leadership development opportunities

We are currently undergoing restructuring within the People and Culture team – this includes the creation of two new sections – one focused on People Development and one on Organisation Design and Change.  Whilst these restructures occur, we have created a new mailbox pcd@ulster.ac.uk for any queries to be raised.

Coaching Programmes

Coaching is a vital part of successful change management, enhancing communication and building commitment. By adopting a coaching style of management, managers can develop their team's skills, encourage staff to take the initiative, problem solve and ultimately enhance performance.

Coaching offers a positive framework for facilitating crucial conversations, encouraging ownership and responsibility. We provide a range of coaching development opportunities:

  • Introduction to Coaching
  • FAST Coaching
  • Facilitating Crucial Conversations

1-1 Leader Development Coaching

Our current Internal Leader Development Coaching Team includes: Marie Ferris and Clare Madden

Mentoring

Informal mentoring and a small number of formal mentoring schemes (i.e., for new academics on probation; Ulster's Enhance, HEA Accredited UKPSF Professional Development & Recognition Scheme and academic women in STEM - FAME mentoring initiative) currently exist within the University and going forward our plan is to create a Mentoring Enabling Hub that will actively promote and provide a range of guidance for establishing and/or developing mentoring schemes along with practical guidance and workshops for Mentors and Mentees on how to facilitate the optimal mentoring development opportunity.

The AURORA Leadership Programme for Women

AURORA is delivered by Advance HE (Leadership Foundation for Higher Education) and designed to encourage women working in higher education to think of themselves as future leaders and to actively engage in developing the leadership side of their careers.

Programme Overview

AURORA involves participants actively engaging in four interlinked development days; two action learning set meetings; self-directed learning and in-house mentoring support delivered over a eight month period.

Ulster participants usually attend workshops at Dublin and one at another UK based venue with the aim of optimising external professional networking opportunities, experiencing different facilitators and role models. Ulster has provided appropriate role models to take part in scheduled events within the AURORA programme.

There is a competitive application process for these university supported places, and recruitment is scheduled to commence in June 2019 to participate in the AURORA 2019/20 Programme.

Dr Mary Hannon-Fletcher is the University's AURORA Champion and normally leads the selection process.

Participation in Aurora is evaluated each year resulting in overwhelming positive feedback such as:

  • Makes you think about what direction you need to take. You need to be tactical in your approach. Really enjoyed the experience. Action learning set day especially
  • Programme was more than just something to go and learn, it shone a light on you and how to develop core leadership skills. Thinking about how you place yourself strategically. What impact do I want to have in my chosen field and the steps I am going to take to achieve this. Aurora has changed my outlook and made me set goals that I have been pontificating about for a long time. Stop talking and do. Empowering.
  • Very worthwhile exercise, gives you the freedom and time to reflect.

Further details about Aurora can be found on the Advance HE Aurora website.
