Tony Cassidy is Professor of Child and Family Health Psychology at Ulster University and has previously been Head of Psychology at the University of Limerick, De Montfort University, and the University of West London. He is a Chartered Scientist with the Science Council, a Registered Health Psychologist and Registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). He is a Fellow of the BPS, the HEA, and the RSA.
He is an honorary founding Fellow of the Behavioural Science in Public Health Network, a founding member of the Children’s Research Network for Ireland and Northern Ireland. He is a Registered Applied Psychology Practice Supervisor. He is a member of the New York Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
He has been active in the British Psychological Society (BPS) as Chair of the Health Psychology Qualifications Board (HPQB), Chair of the Northern Ireland Branch, Chair of the Division of Health Psychology, and Chair of the Continuous Professional Development Committee, the International Association for Applied Psychology, the International Society for Behavioural Medicine, the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health, and a Founder Member of the European Association for Work and Organisational Psychology.
He has received a Distinguished Scholar award from the European Journal of Scientific Research.
His current research includes:
- ESRC / BBSRC Funded network: Epigenetics and the Social Sciences: With Universities of Bristol, Durham, & Glasgow. Project: Folic Acid Supplementation and Child Development.
- NIHR Funded: Public Health Intervention Responsive Studies Teams (PHIRST) with University of Hertfordshire.
Projects on IVF, Miscarriage and Fertility: Looked after children, young carers and wellbeing: Family Health Culture: Child play: Caregiving: and others.
He teaches on the MSc in Health Psychology which he developed and led and on a third level module on Advanced Topics in Developmental Psychology.
He currently supervises 5 PhD students and has previously supervised 22 PhDs at Ulster and 10 prior to Ulster. He has examined over 40 PhDs as external examiner.
He has been an external examiner in psychology at Portsmouth University, Chiltern New University, Manchester Metropolitan University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Staffordshire University, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, and Leicester University. He is currently external examiner at Dublin Business School and Sligo Institute of Technology.
