Professor James Dooley


Overview

Professor James Dooley holds a BSc in Microbiology from the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) in 1982 and a PhD in Biochemistry  from the University of Victoria, Canada in 1988.

He undertook postdoctoral research at the Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh from 1988-1990 prior to taking up a lectureship in medical microbiology at Ulster University. He was appointed Professor of Microbiology in 2007.

James has over 25 years experience of research and teaching in microbiology with a focus on infectious diseases of man and animals.

He has published over 85 primary research papers along with numerous reviews, book chapters, editorials and meeting abstracts (H-index 25).

James has successfully supervised over 20 PhD students and eight MRes students.

He is a member of the editorial board for the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology and regular reviewer for five other journals in the field of microbiology and infectious disease. He provides reviews of grant applications for Welcome Trust, EU Horizon 2020, BBSRC and a variety of other research funding agencies and charities.

  • Improved molecular diagnostic systems for difficult to culture pathogens
  • Ecology of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the environment
  • Biofilm production by human pathogens
  • Role of the gut microbiome in health and disease
  • Teaching Interests
  • Microbes as agents of human infection
  • Microbes as contributors to human health and nutrition
  • Microbes as monitors of environmental health.
  • Actively involved with teaching from year 1 undergraduate to MSc level.

  • Module coordinator for four modules; Medical Microbiology, Diagnostics in Biotechnology, Current Advances in Biosciences, Microbiology and Infectious disease.
