Influence of nutritional knowledge on athletes’ perceptions of food ingredients and additives

Call for participants to assess athletes’ nutrition knowledge and how it influences perception of healthiness of some ingredients and food additives typically used in sports nutrition.

Project Information

Participants required for online survey

The aim of this study is to assess the nutrition knowledge of athletes and to correlate it to perceived healthiness of a range of ingredients and additives typically used in sports nutrition.

A validated questionnaire will be used to assess nutrition knowledge. Additional questions will be added regarding familiarity and perceived healthiness of certain ingredients and additives used in sports nutrition such as maltodextrin, plant-based proteins and sweeteners.

It will be distributed to English speaking athletes in UK, Italy, and Belgium via an online platform.

Overall nutrition knowledge and knowledge within sub-sections of the questionnaire will be analysed. Comparisons between gender/age/nationality/education level) will be made.

Familiarity and perceived healthiness of sport nutrition ingredients will also be compared to results of Cargill proprietary EMEA 2020 IngredienTracker™ which assesses general population consumer perceptions of a broad number of ingredients.

How to participate

My name is Marta Baffigo. I am a Sport and Exercise Nutrition Master of Science student at Ulster University.   As part of my study, I would like to assess athletes’ nutrition knowledge and how it influences perception of healthiness of some ingredients and food additives typically used in sports nutrition.

Are you:

  • fluent in the English language,
  • between 18 and 75 years of age
  • raining regularly (3 times a week) and would typically take part in competitions on a regular basis, for example 2/3 times a year ?
  • Living in Italy, Belgium or UK

If you meet these inclusion criteria, I would like to invite you to participate in this study.

The on-line survey should take approximately 30 minutes to complete and consists of the following sections:

  3. Micro-nutrients
  4. Sport nutrition
  5. Supplements
  6. Alcohol
  7. Sports nutrition ingredients

By completing this survey I am assuming that you are giving your consent to participate in this study, however you are free to leave the survey at any time.

Ethical approval for this study has been granted by the School of Biomedical Sciences Ethics Filter Committee at Ulster University.
