The Library at Ulster University holds a significant number of Special Collections which will be of interest to researchers locally, nationally and internationally. Our Special Collections Strategy

We recognise the rich intellectual value and cultural inheritance provided by our Special Collections and Rare Books. The Special Collections Strategy will inform the decisions we make in regard to the curation, preservation and promotion of these collections.

About the Collections

The Special Collections comprise both manuscript and rare published material and are held separately from the main stock in the University Library. Access conditions will vary depending on the collection you wish to consult and in which campus library the collection is held. Special Collections material can be found in the libraries at Coleraine and Magee.

Browsing access to the Special Collections rooms in Coleraine and Magee is only available to current academic staff,  PhD research students and  Associate staff of Ulster University.

Access and Availability

Opening Hours

The Collections will normally be available to Ulster University staff and students during standard library opening hours although retrieval of material will cease 30 minutes prior to library closure. NB some collection material is housed in closed access and may be only be viewed by prior arrangement with a member of the Special Collections team.

Browsing access to the Special Collections rooms in Coleraine and Magee is only available to current UU academic staff, UU PhD research students and UU Associate staff. Last entry to the Special Collections room is 1 hour prior to library closure, and the Special Collections rooms (and Consultation room at Magee) close 30 minutes before the library closure.

Users requesting browsing access to the Special Collections Rooms in Magee and Coleraine libraries outside of these times are advised to email their request to Library-SpecialCollections@ulster.ac.uk
