Information for applicants from Canada

Undergraduate courses

We accept a wide range of international qualifications. These are assessed individually for their content and level, and against relevant guidelines such as the British Council and the National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (NARIC UK).  The minimum required to be considered for entry to our undergraduate programmes is the equivalent of three A-levels at CCC.  However, some programmes will require higher grades and particular subjects.  Please refer to the specific entry requirements for your chosen programme of study as outlined in the online prospectus.

Generally, students completing Higher Secondary School Certificates at the end of Standard XII will usually be eligible for entry to the first year of undergraduate courses provided they have achieved a minimum of 70% overall.

Postgraduate courses

Typically we require applicants for taught masters programmes (MA, MSc, MRes, MBA, MPA, LLM) to hold a bachelors degree (usually in a relevant subject) with a good grade.

Entry requirements will vary dependent on recognition of University and scoring system used.

As a guide, a score of between 60-80% is considered comparable to a UK 2.1, while a score of between 50-69% is considered comparable to a UK 2.2, depending on the ranking of the institution.

English Language Entry Requirements

To study at Ulster University, you need good English and we will need to see recent evidence of this (certified within the last two years).

Most of our courses require a minimum English level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with no band score under 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement.

Some courses have higher language prerequisites – please check entry requirements on the relevant course webpage. You may be asked for a Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate: IELTS or Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE), or you may hold other English language qualifications that we can recognise. Please see Here  for the complete list of English language tests/qualifications which Ulster University may recognise.

Our Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT) offers a range of English language courses, which are designed to prepare international students with the necessary language skills for academic study at Ulster University.
