Undergraduate courses

Each course will have slightly different requirements, both in terms of overall points and certain subjects, so please check the relevant subject in the undergraduate on-line prospectus.

In general for entry onto an undergraduate degree course you must have passed the Senior High School Leaving Certificate and have successfully completed one of the following:

  • a recognised UK Foundation/Access Course.
  • the first year of a Bachelors degree with an overall average of 70%.
  • the Junior College Diploma.

For entry to Postgraduate courses

Our on-line postgraduate prospectus indicates if there are any additional programme requirements.

Typically we require applicants for taught Masters programmes (MA, MSc, MRes, MBA, MPA, LLM) to hold a Bachelors degree (usually in a relevant subject) with a grade equivalent to a UK upper second class honours.

Applicants should normally hold a good four year Bachelors degree from a national university with an overall average of 70% of above.

If your degree is from a new private university you will be required to obtain 80% or above.

Alternatively if you have completed a Junior College Diploma followed by a two year 'top up degree' from a national or recognised private university* with an overall average of 70% or above.

Applicants from a private university* will be required to obtain 80% or above.

English Language Entry Requirements

To study at Ulster University, you need good English and we will need to see recent evidence of this (certified within the last two years).

Most of our courses require a minimum English level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with no band score under 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement.

Some courses have higher language prerequisites – please check entry requirements on the relevant course webpage.

You may be asked for a Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate: IELTS or Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE), or you may hold other English language qualifications that we can recognise. Please see Here for the complete list of English language tests/qualifications which Ulster University may recognise.

Our Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT) offers a range of English language courses, which are designed to prepare international students with the necessary language skills for academic study at Ulster University.
